I was initially pleased when the co-op started using degradable bags - I stilll used my own bags most of the time, but if I forgot to I didn't feel too guilty - but reading this article has made me think again.

I've read the Co-op response to Andy http://www.selfsufficientish.com/thecoop.htm and they say that it's safe...
Who is right?? Is it safe to use these degradable bags for my compost bin liner?? More often than not we just use a bucket without a liner but if we've had these degradable bags (none at mo so I can't go and look at what it says on the bag) I've sometimes used them and just chucked the lot in the compost bin.
Obviously - the best thing to do is not to use these in the first place and take the Selfsufficientish advice to Carry-a-bag!!

sure can... I'm generally shouting before they start moving the first item... I've got my own bags...
Another sure fire way if you are doing a 'supermarket' shop (can I swear) is to put your own bags at the front of the items on the conveyor belt... that way it's obvious that you have your own bags.

I gotta say that a biodegradeable plastic bag still seems to me to be missing the point...............Reusable bags has to be they way to go!

I totally agree Nev! The supermarkets could even afford to produce them and give a couple away free to their customers - they could be emblazoned with the shop logo too - but they probably won't.
