Hello from sunny Southampton.

We love hearing from you, so here is your chance. Introduce yourself and tell us what makes you selfsufficient 'ish'. Go on don't be shy, we welcome one and all. You can also tell us how you heard about us if you like.

Hello from sunny Southampton.

Post: # 108611Post smbm »

Hi all

Been a lurker on the sight for a little while (needing tips on tomato growing amongst other things).

Decided I should finally join up to add my skills to the mix.

I'm in my first year of training to be an electrician and am self employed. Decided to grow some of my own food this year as work is starting to slow down! Much more importantly I've been dabbling in home brew too (with mostly good results so far).

I've noticed a few posts on here about Ubuntu Linux. I'm an active member of the community there too and if anyone needs help with that I can probably offer some insight.

So there you have it, I'm looking forward to honing my frugalness here so I can see out this period of economic doom and gloom and still have fresh fruit and veg on the plate (and hopefully beer in my glass).

Hopefully I will eventually be able to realise my dream of being almost self sufficient, working a couple of days here and there and surfing the rest of the time.

Cheers everyone.

Tom

Hi Tom :hello2:

That Ubuntu experience WILL be in great demand, I suspect.

Ubuntu, yes! I'm already getting a bit stumped on that front!

And a Southamptoner! Is suspect you're already familiar with the Hobbit... :drunken:

Indeed I am. Back in the day they used to have a slightly more relaxed policy towards actually scrutinizing IDs to make sure they weren't fake. I have a degree of loyalty towards them for that.

You a native or did you move here?

Glad to help with Ubuntu too, what's the problem?

I moved to soton for uni (the real one, not the institute  ) but since then I've integrated better than most students... having work, friends in the town, so I sort of count myself as a semi-native now

As far as I was aware the Hobbit policy on actually checking ID was after that underage girl got abducted (and murdered, if my memory serves me rightly)... though in recent times I don't get checked on the basis of being a regular :drunken:

Ubuntu... I've only just migrated, and I'm having trouble with DRM (that'll teach me to legally download, eh!), though I've managed to suss playing flash files and streaming .ram files, so I'll keep at it a bit before I wuss out and cry for help... though that may not be long! What a gorgeous operating system though!

Awesome. We moved here when I was a kid, I moved away for a while but ended up back here. So I'm a semi native too

Cool, I still get down there from time to time, it has a great atmosphere, especially in the summer in the garden.

It is pretty awesome. It does everything I need it to do (though I don't have any DRM protected files) without ever crashing or getting viruses or anything :cooldude:
