Wrens nest in Land Rover

Post: # 103612Post MINESAPINT »

Just walking past my Land Rover last night and noticed a Wren fly out from under it. I noticed it was flying in a suspicious manner and an investigation revealed she had built a nest in the rear crossmember of the chassis. No eggs yet.

What are the options, I cannot leave it parked for a couple of months!

Why not?

Sorry - don't take that seriously. If you need your transport, it's not an option... I'd take it away asap, before it gets more serious, and block the access. And hope the wren finds somewhere else that's suitable. I think one had started nesting in my garage - until it got chased away by the cats!

If you move it now (it'll most likely be destroyed in the process) when it's empty, you'll do no more harm than to make the wren build another in a more sensible place. You may get attacked and savaged by a small, angry bird in the process, but that's life

Ina & MKG, thanks, thats what I thought. The sooner I deter it the more chance it has of having a sucessful breeding season elsewhere. I do now have additional information that has made me feel better. A male Wren builds several nests and does this quite easily spending a couple of hours or so on each. He then takes his girlfriend round the various nests in the hope one will be to her liking in which case he will have his wicked way with her. I reckon she would not have liked a rusty old Land Rover anyway.

Ah well - that's the difference between the male and female of of view...

Quite honestly - I'd prefer to build my own nest.

Robins nest in horse wagon.

Post: # 104944Post Teasal »

We took our horses to a show last week, met some friends there and spent a lovely day. Just before leaving, friends OH heard something under the engine compartment of the truck. He looked, and was amazed to see a nest complete with five little robins, calling for their tea .....they hurriedly packed up and left for home. Happily when they got there, the mum and dad robins were waiting anxiously for their family to return, so no harm done on this occasion. Poor robins would wonder where their babies were ......they had been gone all day!!

Our friends are leaving their wagon parked until the little birds can fly.

It pays to check vehicles that are parked up for the winter, as this wagon was.
