Shame you're not a little nearer.

BTW I deleted your other thread, as per your request.

Top tip

Remove bases and use as plant mini green houses

to remove base, soak some cotton string in nail varnish remover (acetone), tie around the wall of the jar and ignite

the glass will crack due to the intense heat

There are a few You Tube clips, Glyn, which might be a good place to start.

I have only seen the technique used on wine bottles, so some experimentation may be required, but i'd used the white cotton parcel string, and chilling may not be nessersary

you could fill them with fairy lights to make a nice lighting affect.
or give them to someone who'll use them for brewing - because once you've removed the base they'll never be used for brewing again.

we still have plenty in reserve for brewing ,and a few cloches would be useful to protect a few early crops

Alternatively just put boiling water in the bottom and watch the base drop off ....:(

Storage would be even more problematic

They will be a good deal more vulnerable with out the rigidity of the base

Pass them on to some other sucker

I think you have to score around the base with a glass cutter, put the demi john into a bowl with cold water just above the score line, then pour in boiling water, that is how I saw it done many years ago :cooldude: I think

if you cut the bases off at least they'd be stackable and take up less room.
