My cat has been bitten on his back :(
He has a huge lump on his back and it looks like its infected. I cant get a good look as he's doesnt like being touched much even when he is healthy. Ill phone the vet in the morning and try and get him in tmw but it looks horrid!!

Problem is we live in the sticks and I cant tell if its a snake bite or cat or rat or whoknows!

Sorry to hear about your cat Nick. One of our moggies got bitten by a rat and that turned quite nasty bit the vet soon got it sorted. I'll keep my fingers crossed, keep us posted on how he is.

Do you live in an area where Adders live? ( bracken or low ground-covering foliage). If the injury is a sudden thing, then it could be snake-bite. Afriends dog got bitten & came up in a massive lump, but after some routine treatment, next day, was fine. :thumbright:

Poor thing! Our cat has had a couple of nasty bites from other cats living nearby. He developed big lumps and they were obviously very tender. But a quick trip to the vet (where they clipped the fur from round the wound and gave him a painkiller injection and a course of anti-biotic tablets) and he was feeling much happier.
The pain didn't seem to affect his appetite at all, so maybe a few treats will keep your cat's spirits up til the vet's opens! : )

Thankyou for your replies. He is still eating and drinking as normal and it doesnt seem to be affecting his mobility (its on top of his spine). I shall let you all know how it goes tmw.

Oh and yes Adders live in our area. Im in North Devon and see them in our village most days during the summer, along with grass snakes.

good luck for your vet trip tomorrow - our cat was badly bitten last year - no idea what by although we reckon it might have been a dog at one of the holiday cottages.

She wouldn't let us touch her and just hid - wouldn't eat etc and was no better the next day so OH took her to the vets - it was horrid even getting her in her box cos I knew I was hurting her..

She came back squeaking, lively and happy and troughed her food - a totally different cat - amazing what some tlc in the form of painkillers and antibiotics made - she proceeded to make a really quick and full recovery - I was soooooooo glad we took her to the vets

One of my cats was bitten by a dog and got an infection on his spine. He became paralyzed and the vet said he would die but showed me how to help him urinate (pressing his tummy) and to feed soft food, you get the picture. I insisted on cheap antibiotics that cross the blood-brain barrier because the spinal cord is protected in that deal. Three days later he was climbing curtains again.
The vet calls him 'the undead' now.

Most likely an abcess needing a course of anti biotics. If you have a strong stomach you can squeeze the gunk out and clean the wound with cotton wooll and a saline solution ( some salt in cooled boiled water) One of our cats got them on the top of their head quite regularly, man that pus that came out was enough to put you off custard for ever!

Hope the cat recovers well, they normally do. :thumbright:

Good luck, one of my cats got a bite near her anus which got infected so we had great 'fun' dabbing her bum with iodine for several days (after a visit to the vet). She really didn't like that!

He is learning to come home fast as one cat chased him inside and came through our cat flap in to the house and was rapidly confronted by our 2 dogs. AND THEY DONT LIKE CATS!!! or cows.
