A self sufficient Christmas?

So what are we all doing for Christmas that ranks as self sufficientish?

Well all the veg will be fresh out of the garden.
Christmas pudding and mincemeat will include home grown and produced raisins, sultanas and dried apricots.
Other than that, not much I'm afraid.

We are "in between" with our Christmases - kids grown, left and developing their own families and not yet returning to the nest for events. We will be having Christmas dinner with our daughter - picnic in a nearby national park.

The only Ishish thing about Christmas this year will be rebuilding the sadly neglected patch ready for autumn.

Everything foodwise is made from scratch, including Christmas pudding, cake, mince meat for the pies and chocolates but apart from (hopefully) the last of the hydroponic tomatoes and a few herbs, none of it will have been grown by us this year.

We haven't done presents for the last few years, usually getting something for the house instead. We don't really need anything, or need to replace anything at the moment though. So, in a bid to encourage my OH to get try out his new wood workshop, we've agreed to make each other a present this year. He started my present yesterday. (I confess to being quite excited).

From me he's getting a jumper and some home made shaving soap and aftershave.

Ahh, Christmas is the worst. We live about 300 miles away from our nearest family, so it always entails a pilgrimage by car (it's not really train-able) that pretty makes it as far as self-sufficient as it could possibly be.

On the upside, I'm going to see what seeds I can raid from my parent's shed.

Nothing, really... Sigh. Well, I still have one Brussels sprouts plant in the garden - don't know whether that'll survive until Christmas, though.
