What Is For Tea?

Thought this might be fun - I love nosing into what people are having for dinner and sometimes it can be the inspiration for trying something different.

So, what are you having for dinner?

On my part this is a bit of a cop-out this week as our lovely pub has just brought back 'stone baked pizza night', so we are off to give that a try. But I did make soup for lunch today - first Leek and Stilton of the season, with oatcakes. Love it!!

The way things are going we could be having my Nan's favourite when we asked what was for tea and she would say bread and pull it. I don't know maybe another stir fry, I go out into the garden and find bits and pieces of stuff, last night it was red pepper, finger aubergine, onion, garlic, courgette, carrot and red and tuscan kale, added cooked rice, grated fresh turmeric, stem ginger, a bit of harrisa and some soy sauce, oh and a few Atlantic prawns I found in the freezer.

Dead simple tonight, mushroom omelette and chips.
We have a glut of eggs and potatoes.

I've had a spousal request for Spag Bol. I can't remember the last time we had it and he even dug the mince out of the freezer last night. The lad means business!

In other news I've just made my first ever batch of cultured butter - bloomin' gorgeous.

Haha Odsox what was I thinking - we are all just going to be 'omelette omelette omlette'!

Digger that sounds amazing, I cannot WAIT for this time next year, I will be doing the same I hope.

Maggie - pray tell more about cultured butter? Never heard of it?

Is that the same as the homemade butter made with ripened cream that I grew up with ?

Oooh great post, thanks! Sounds amazing, how satisfying to make it yourself. Guessing 600ml equates to about 600g - what's that, three 'normal' packs? Amazing for 50p. Do you think it is worth making for the taste if the cream was full price?

I don't know really. I don't think the price would compare favourably with the organic butter we get with our veg box. But it might be worth considering - nothing was wasted.

Oh my...I've just realised we can have a cream tea. Buttermilk scones, homemade cultured butter, raw cream and homemade jam. I really need my own cow.

That's pretty much the same Maggie.
We had a Jersey cow and the cream was skimmed from the evening milk and put in a basin. Then when enough had been collected it was churned and made the most gorgeous orange coloured butter.

The morning milk was used for general use and the evening milk was skimmed and poured down the drain

Probably going to useful a bacon and mushroom risotto. Did do a lovely sweet potato curry the other day so could reheat some of that.

Slow cooked beef stew for us, Grandpa's with us tonight so it can't be anything remotely spicy, so (in my dad's view) most my usual cooking is out the window.

Beet braised lentils and belly pork. Hopefully sufficient will be left for dinner on Friday (tomorrow is our broth day).

Some kind of porky, apple saucy casserole thingy for us tonight to use up the contents of the meat box. Probably with mash - it's chilly and I fancy something warm and comforting. Hoping there is green cabbage in our veggie box but if not I shall get some braised red cabbage on the go with grated beetroot and apple in it. Can you tell we have an apple tree that is going crazy at the moment?
