Barnsdale

Post: # 280052Post Pumkinpie »

Had a wonderful day visiting Barnsdale gardens in Rutland yesterday.
Saw gardens that were created for Gardeners world when Geoff Hamilton hosted it in the 70s and 80s.
It was nice to see in real life the gardens I had watched been made in a field all those years ago . Avid viewing in our house at 8.30 on a Friday evening.
It was 'The Ornamental Kitchen Garden' and the Herb garden that got me started wanting to grow my own fruit and veg organically all those years ago. He had ideas ahead of his time, as a lot of chemicals were used in gardens then. A lot of which are now banned.
Loved just sitting in the sun dreaming , it was a fantastic day.

I'd love to visit there. I'm glad it lived up to expectations.

Geoff Hamilton was my absolute favourite TV gardener, I've still got the Ornamental Kitchen Garden book.

Absolutely green with envy.I really don't know why I've never been.He was, and remains, one of my favourite gardeners along with Lawrence Hills, who of course influenced so much of his gardening. The last time I went to Ryton there was a garden there that was laid out 'Barnsdale style' in his memory.
I must go.

We were there a few years ago, it is a brilliant place to visit. Would love to go back again, but don't tell SWMBO she thinks I hate all this gardening malarky

Visit the gardens in term time in Spring or early Autumn and you have them almost to yourselves. I love the place & will miss it once we're in Ireland.
