Question for men: how big are your hands?
I am not a fetishist (I promise). I am knitting some mittens for my dad for Xmas (I am planning ahead, I know this is a bit mad) and the first one seems very big. My hands are kind of thin so I keep trying it on and panicking. I have tried it on my other half and it is better, but his hands are a very strange shape and I don't think he's representative. I don't want to go round asking all the men I know how big their hands are because I just can't take the jokes and innuendo (and I can't ask Dad as it is a surprise, also it is July, he will think I am mad).
The mittens are complicated and I can't face reknitting the pigging thing on smaller needles, also I'm not sure it would be very easy to get smaller needles.
If anyone is sitting there with a ruler/ tape measure, could you measure your hands for me? I just want the width of the palm at the knuckles (the widest bit just below the fingers). Mine is 3", I am hoping some other people's are wider.
Thank you everyone! Much appreciated ;-).

No I won't use a smiley because I've decided to turn into Boboff, as he's turned all nice all of a sudden. Grumble grumble.

3.5 inches - and I'd say I'm probably average-ish height and build.

He is 3 3/4" (and is 6 foot 4").
Funny though cos I thought his hands were ENORMOUS compared to mine!

You are all bigger than my dad though, he is 5'8" !
I am worried he will wear these mittens even if they look ludicrous. I once made him him a hat that made him look like the top of his head had been sharpened (in my defence it looked fine on me). When he put it on OH and I were speechless, and when he left the room OH turned to me and said, 'Susie, we must take into account in the future the fact that your father has an unusually pointy head'. It was terrible. And to make it worse he has worn the bloody thing for years and tells everyone I knitted it for him, I bet they think, why would she do that, does she not like him very much.

Well with the Mittens and the Hat, a fishing rod will really finish of the "ensamble!"
Sorry, made me laugh!

Or get a clean pint glass (the 'vase' type), give him a cold drink, then let it dry after he's held it. When it has come back to room temperature, dust it very lightly with talc...you should be able to measure his palm print.
