poundland joy!

Post: # 222595Post pops »

i went in this morningh and saw they've got loads of gardening stuff - including 1.5 x 5m lengths of horticultural fleece, mulch mats and polytunnels!

got meself some multipurpose compost for seedlings and some general fertilser, going back next week (with my pocket money!) for the 6 packs of seeds for £1 and the hand fork and bamboo canes (pack of 12!) and probably the week after that...

i love poundland :hugish:

I used to think pound shops were good value... now I think you need to be on your guard. Pack sizes are being remade to fit the "pound" price point for pound shops. Stuff like paracetamol is far cheaper elsewhere, I suspect your seed packet quantities are a fraction of normal ... check the price per 100g or whatever. Re-packaging cons abound. Crisps and snacks are value though...

ooops - what a giveaway.

I got a load of cheap seeds,4 packets for 99p. who cares if you get a bit less than normal. Also got blackcurrant and gooseberry bushes for a £1 each, good size as well.

I'm not sure that's really a problem, as Berti (I think) posted in another thread, most seed packets contain far too many anyway.

My only slight concern is that they might be older seeds but even so if you get a reasonable rate of sprouting it's a cheap option to get started.

Don't expect any £1 garden tools to last you very long though  But again they'll do you a season or two and by then you'll know whether you want to invest in better ones

Have a look in A$da too - they do some pretty good gardening tools very cheap!

My favourite Poundland goodies are 30x zip up freezer bags for £1 (they use up the least possible space in my little freezer), and there big bottle of pomegranate washing up liquid as it has a beautiful smell and is really good for cleaning as well

I havn't got a 99p store but I find The Works is pretty good for supplies

I don't know them but must investigate when I'm over there next week. Do they sell green garden twine as it's on my shopping list to buy from Wilkinsons?

I'm pretty sure they do.

I've been buying the silicone bakeware. I've got a tiny oven in China, but no cake tins, so i've bought the poundland specials. I'll leave them all there with the oven when i've finished with the orient!

It's not only the pound shops that are repackaging for cost. I shop almost exclusivly at asda and they do this same thing a lot. We buy the packs of cooked hame for the wifes bait and a year ago it was 500g for £4.00 then it went to 450 g for £4 now it's 425g for £4. People don't really notice much because the shop focuses on the price and bang on big stickers of the price. Fair be it for the shop doing this as it is their stratergy. Another example was their bags of frozen mince we used to buy for the dog. again 500g for £2 now it is 454g for £2.

This doesn't sound much but it works out at nearly 10% reduction and we used to buy 10 bags a month so it was like losing one bag of mince but paying the same money.
