Post: # 207851Post old tree man »

I thought you would like to see this, 20yrs ago i had a contract to plant an oak wood in a secluded place in north yorkshire they were only whips when i planted them 11" high, i planted 10,000 hard woods, its lovely to think that my grandchildren and their grandchildren will see these mature, its a great legacy to leave :thumbright:

Wow, how satisfying to see. And to think that those trees could still be around in hundreds of years time, when we are all just carbon molecules.

Nice one :thumbright:

I have just watched the short film, what a beautiful story it really warms your heart quite humbling really......
it was a cold winter when my wood was planted, when i was young and fit it was quite normal to plant 1000 trees a day on a flat piece of land, i would truly love to go round the country and check on the other trees that i have planted it must go into the thousands covering nearly 40yrs, i have never really thought of it much but seeing my oak wood has ignited my interest, alot of the trees would have been soft wood but a vast majority will be hardwoods, at least i have made my mark on this world and that makes me feel good :flower: :flower:

I was watching a bit about old oak trees from the last episode of Countryfile and it seems that you find their age by measuring the girth of the trunk - I have a big old one I keep meaning to do this to! They had one that was 9 metres circumference which equalled 900 years old...... At a guess my big un would be at least 100 if not 200 years old then - possibly even as old as my house. I have such respect for these trees. :salute:
