I cannot deny the logic of that one little bit. However , it's perhaps the doomer in me that wouldn't feel easy having only a weeks worth of food in the house , I'm more used to having a couple of months at the very least.

Tinned and packet is fine for a bit longer unless you have someone in the house who is convinced that using a tin of baked beans after midnight on the last day of the use by date will poison you. There's a few of them around.
