Green Housing - Self Build

Was quite surprised to see that there is no category for green self-building? or am I missing it somewheres?

I kept meaning to add a comment to this thread, but forgot all about it.

Just to say that while green building, in all its forms is A Jolly Good Thing, and pretty interesting to boot, I'm thinking that a selfsufficient-ish view of self-building might have a broader scope than just what is considered 'green'. So I'm just a little concerned that the title of the section is a bit limiting.

I reckon that there is a legitimate place for bricks and mortar, even concrete and plastic in self building. And there are techniques and products, like papercrete, SIPs panels, and polystyrene foam forms for poured concrete, and probably many other things too, which are not, in the purest sense, green. But they are ways that make building an SS-ish home accessible to ordinary, unskilled people.

Just my thoughts - not trying to start an argument.

Maybe it should be SSISH building.. which would cover all of it.

Doesn't worry me one bit. Am just glad to be able to talk about construction in all its interesting forms.

You are right though Muddy, I still had to buy lots of little bits to make my building happen - and they were always surprisingly expensive! While I would have been happy to recycle old hinges for windows etc. A lot of things just don't stand the test of time and need to be replaced, or can't be found etc. Rubber and plastic drip lines for windows, door jams that needed a certain width I just couldn't find or would have waited yonks to find... that kind of thing.

Having said that, I think folks would be hard pressed saying the building isn't green, but good on them if they want to argue it.
