Earth Hour 2010

Do you know about an event that you want to talk about? Is there a campaign you have started, are involved in or want to start? Inspired by Marvin Gaye this is your place to tell the world what's going on.

We turned everything we could off last year, sat by candlelight and played Pass The Pigs. At 9.30pm, himself was dying to turn the TV back on - turned it on, saw what was on, and turned it back off again.

I'm busily trying to promote this and, I'm afraid, failing miserably. Fed up of hearing excuses as to why it can't be done. It's not like they are saying 'turn everything off', it's only your lights.

Mind you, the only light on in our whole house at the moment is the side light next to me, and I'll be turning that off in a minute because Mr 'I don't know what a jumper is' has just put the bloody three bar fire on. ALL THREE BARS! My attempts to disable two bars has, therefore, been unsuccessful.

Fed up to the back teeth of trying to explain - without being preachy and sanctimonious - why it wouldn't kill people to turn their lights off for an hour. Fed up of people denying the concept of climate change, or human involvement in climate change, of people only thinking about their own comfort.

Maybe if I said 'Send hubby to the pub, put the kids in bed, and then turn off your lights, light some candles round the bath and have a candlelit scented bath for an hour' they'd listen - because then it would be about them indulging themselves.

Dear Marshlander,

Followed the link in your posting. Got to the site only to find an "Official Partner" is Coca Killer!!!!!!!! Without wishing to denigrate the idea (which is wonderful) I do wish they'd be more careful about the company they keep.

Anyway, our lights will be off,

Love and Peace

OMG - what a fantastic idea.

I did the earth hour last year and no-one in our house noticed.

We regularly have 'earth hours' here due to the number of power cuts over winter and have come to cherish them as together time - candlelit card games with nibbles, or ghost stories with a glass of wine (obviously not wine for the teenager) - she tells the most gruesome stories!

In the summer we spend our evenings outside, nothing left on in the house, just candles on the terrace outside.

I did this last year and no-one in our house noticed.

We didn'tdo anything here, we try to be mindful ALL year as Im sure you guys do to.
What concerns me most about this Earth Hour is that the vast majority of people think that for them one hour a year is the total sum of their energy saving and in their eyes they've done their bit!

:(

I'm sorry to say I fell asleep on the settee yesterday evening, and woke up at 9:15pm, TV still on, lights still on, everything, so I pretty much missed Earth Hour. However, my ongoing commitment to wandering around the house turning things off after everyone still stands. And this year I aim to work on remembering to make my coffee after I have boiled the kettle just once.

I'm inclined to agree with you. We don't do earth hour.. but try to be thoughtful about usage all year round.
