I've started the next module of my Open University Course. For my first assignment I have to research a product and show how it has evolved over the years. My product of choice is the TV remote control. I've got lots of information from various sources but I want to show how remote control technology has moved on and list different devices that can now be controlled remotely. I've got the obvious ones, but I'm looking for things that are more obscure or specialised. Do you use remotely controlled machinery at work for instance? To get us started here are a few off the list so far:

1. Television
2. Games consoles (Wii, nintendo etc)
3. Radio/cd player
4. DVD
5. Car locking/alarm mechanisms
6. Excavators in the construction industry
7. Toys

Very much along the same lines as what you've already got, but a remote controlled powerpoint presentation removes the need for a second person changing the slides in the projector at the back of the room.

Not got any of those apart from a tiny remote that came with a second-hand iMac and got lost immediately! It's not a necessary item anyway, just a bit of bling.

The nearest thing I can think of is the dog. He sometimes acts by remote control but often, he's too remote.

I fitted our outside lights with a remote controller, it's very convenient and saves running a wire down to the drive gates to switch them on, and another wire to the house to switch them off again.

I have heard that remote controlled 'adult' toys that vibrate are available

I often see cards printed with radio controlled taxi's but I've yet to see the person who has the transmitter!

You can now get remotes to switch off the electrical supply to TV's and audio equipment which might be worth considering.

access ways such as Gates and doors are a common radio controlled unit. also cars alarms and locking.


any form of off site control system is remote controlled, with the age of the internet it is much much easier to do than you would think. lots of very heavy machinery is done this way as well to create a more comfortable working environment. yes its a hard wired link but could also be done wirelessly using normal wireless transmitters. (there is a link i found about how to create a quasi internet using the broadcast function of a PCs wireless network card incase the government pull it down to prevent another arab spring)

the biggy has to be any form of space exploration.
