101 substitutes for potatoes

101 Uses For is popular and let's hope it stays that way. Our second book is presently called 101 tips for self sufficiency; we will certainly dip into this section for ideas. So post away and let's try and get at least one thread up to 101.

101 substitutes for potatoes

Post: # 125784Post Ellendra »

Potatoes are my favorite meal. But i must have eaten too many, because suddenly I'm allergic to them!!

I know rice and pasta are starches, but they just aren't the same. Any ideas for things that would actually taste like potatoes?

Apparently millet is supposed to be a good substitute and can be made to have the consistency of mashed potatoes but I haven't tried it so can't vouch for it.

How about taro? These are called "satoimo" in Japanese, "imo" being "potato". Although they aren't actually potatoes, they're fairly potato-like.

Are you allergic to all varieties of potato? There are so many cultivars, perhaps there are some you may be OK with...

I know in Germany, Jerusalem artichokes are recommended as substitute for potatoes, especially for diabetics... I know not everybody is too keen on them!

They never have that effect on me - strange. Also - nobody ever mentioned that effect in Germany. Now what is it you eat here that would - combined with JAs - produce so much wind? :bootyshake:

Polenta is good as a mash substitute, absorbs yummy gravy and is lovely with parmasan in it.

Sweet potatoes or parsnips? Is it that potatoes are in the nightshade family and you are sensitive to whatever that chemical is in nightshades that isn't so healthy for us? I don't eat grains much at all and eat lots of spuds. I feel better tho' when I eat parsnips instead.

I think parsnips are the real ambrosia.

Dear Agapanthus,

Thank you, I'll try it next time she goes away for a few days. (Just to see if it does work!)
