Has anyone experimented with the use of bicycle-like setups to charge batteries or run appliances directly?

Can anyone advise me as to the feasibility of charging a 12V car battery or similar from a pedal-powered generator, and then running appliances off the battery? I am aware that such a setup necessarily involves losses.

I'd like to go off-grid, but I think I'd need to keep my computer . I'd also like to use recycled materials in any setup like this. Also, with the Government and the power grid the way they are(our Premier is often referred to as Power Point Pete) I'd like an option.

Hope you don't mind if I direct you to a thread from early last year.

I've also, half jokingly, pointed people to this book.

I have actually got a copy of it, and it's full of practical advice (though USA-centric), but it is not a book about how to save money, and nor does it discuss any philosophical reasons for wanting to live off-grid.
