There is a very thorny bush near where I live with what look like black rosehips, does anyone have any guess whether they are indeed rosehips or if they are some sort of imposter, or if there is any way for me to tell?

Hi

Does anyone know if Rosa spinosissima was used as a rootstock? I have a old bush in the original farmhouse "garden" that looks very similar except with very dark purple hips, flowers look the same. I have long suspected this plant was just the stock taken over the graft but it could reasonably be deliberately planted - the original settlers were Scots.
