Limerick Competiton - Win books and books special offer.

Post: # 147154Post Andy Hamilton »

I don't know about you but I am full of the joys of spring at the moment and so I thought to keep this mood alive we could start a limerick competition just to do something different.

I will pick the four best* limericks and then voting will open.
* It's my opinion it might be that others would have picked other limericks, I am a bit of a heathen so don't take it personally if I don't pick yours. In fact you should take it as a compliment.

Here is a brief description of what a limerick is and remember this is supposed to be a little bit of fun so don't get too bogged down with form.

I will be looking for highly original ones, funny one and ones with ish themes.

I will close the competition for entries at 11.00am on Wednesday May 13th (When I get back from the dentist) so there is plenty of time to get yours in. There is no limit to how many you enter.

The prize..... Well Black Dog Publishing have offered us a copy of "growing Stuff". which is a book that will help anyone in their first steps of gardening. It is well presented and reads like a cookbook; what I mean is that it very simple and step by step. I guess if you are trying out new vegetables it will help you out too. It is a little different than most gardening books very contemporay offering advice on how to seed bomb, save seed and even grow out of tea cups! I will say that the further reading and resource section is crap as it does not mention selfsufficientish.com or The selfsufficientish Bible

Oh and black dog publishing are offering a 40% discount to any of you who mention selfsufficientish in your subject heading. email jess@blackdogonline.com. To order a copy.

Anyway here is a limerick to get you started.

There was a website known as ish
That never had any fish
It was run by Andy, Dave and the mods
Who had lost all their rods
Which is why there was never any fish.

I hope you do better as that was terrible.

ISH folk are the best on the planet,
Of plastic they all say ‘ban it!’
They grow their own crops
On all sizes of plots,
Then snack on their veggies like gannets!

There was an 'ish' man called Reggie,
Who grew & ate his own veggie,
But his wife (named Pam),
Said "i want to make jam",
So he grew some fruit in his false leggy.
it's either one or the other, or neither of the two.

I am having to steer clear of the one about a vampire called Mabel

Andy Hamilton gave a talk at our moot
The Pagans thought it was a hoot
He gave advice on making things
Flat bottoms & decrusting our rings
And made us want to grow our own veg & fruit

There was a young girl from Wales
Who grew veg in blustry gales
"Well fancy that!"
The old hands spat
And drank her homemade ales!

It teaches us how to grow beans,
And turnips and carrots and lettuce and squash,
Which all taste so great and save us much dosh,
It's 'the' resource for the eco scene.

Well the form may not be great but insomnia has brought forward these 3:

I like to know what's on my plate
More than just a best before date
Where has it been?
What has it seen?
Thats why ishing’s just so great!

My ish-ish carrots just ain’t growin’
Despite all my days of careful hoein'
Did I do something wrong?
Should I sing them a song?
Hell, I’ve got no way of knowing!

My wormery is such a state
Not much dry stuff there of late
The worms are sad
The smell is bad
But at least they make good fISHin' bait!

There once was an Isher called Andy,
Whose foraging skills came in handy,
when twin brother Dave,
wanted drinks for his rave,
He made him some nice Laver shandy!

:pukeright:

I'll get my coat.....

I would take the pledge
To grow my own veg
But without any land
To nurture by hand
I'm stuck with the stuff in the hedge.

Best wishes, 2ndRateMind

here are 2 I made earlier... (not polished yet may have another go when I get time):

There once was a twin with a wish
To be totally selfsufficient-ish.
Now he and his brother,
As well as Nan, Dad & Mother,
Do it all with just the odd glitch.

Its not easy to be totally green,
And live well like a King or a Queen,
But ask Dave or Andy,
Their advice is so handy,
And you'll never be a has-bean.

Is it too much to ask that we care
and value the sea and the soil and the air?
Or shall we just try
To continue the lie
That profit is king, and none of it's spare?

Best wishes, 2ndRateMind

The hoe is our favourite toy
The Spring makes our hearts leap with joy
For we are all Ishers
Our food is delicious
The things we can do with Savoy!

(edited to add another)

An Isher went down the allotment
And many a folk passed a comment
For the state of her dress
Left nought to impress
But her veg was just transcendent
Rosey xx
