hi from netherlands
hello everybody :)
I am berti (female, 41) divorced mom of two teen daughters 13 and 16 plus two maine coon neuters, living in south east netherlands.
Lately life has brought quite a lot of things on my plate to reconsider, and decide what I want with my new life now.
It's a fact that quite a few years ago, I've been dreaming about having a veg garden and live in the country.
Of course, being a single mom, that last part, is not gonna happen the way I'd like to.
But I have recently decided to just go for it and see how self sufficient I can become while still living where I do now.
Sadly I have no garden, but a terrace with pavement of only 40 m2, which I kinda regret now........also it doesn't get a lot of sun, about 6 hours a day, and bad soil (where some is) to boot.
On the other hand, there should be other possibilities to at least grow a few veggies and kitchen herbs.
I already am into frugal living, bake my own (sourdough and sometimes yeast bread, spin wool/ alpaca/ angora, knit with my own yarns which I sometimes also dye, make quilts and have some holistic healing knowledge....
Today I ordered the new complete selfsufficiency by john seymour.
Next year I am going to join WWOOF, and hopefully spend a little while on an organic farm, to experience what it will be like.
Now, I will sit back and wait for all your mails to come in and will do my best to share whatever experiences I have that I can help you with on your way to self sufficiency.
Who likes to email with other people in the world, feel free to write, I like that kind of stuff!
warmest greetings
berti

Hiya Berti, and welcome to SSish! Well, container gardening is one way to start... And you are a bit further on with the wool processing - I'm about to start on my fleece and cashmere fibre... So far I've had to buy the yarn for knitting, but I do make all my own socks and jumpers.

Berti
Six hours should be enough for most things. Containers, pots, hanging baskets. All good ways to grow with. What is the general weather like where you are?

'You know you are a hard-core gardener if you deadhead flowers in other people's gardens.
To err is human. To blame someone else, is management potential.

Hello!
Welcome from a fellow Dutchwoman! I am near Utrecht.
Have you considered taking up an allotment? I have one and it keeps me and my husband in veg for the main part of the year. All organic.
I really dig my allotment (pun intended) as it is much more fun than the gym, but I get a much needed workout and I relax mentally most of the time. Some of the time I panic, admittedly, with all the work that needs to be done or my mind goes fizzy with plans, but most of the time I relax mentally while I work physically.
That being said, container gardening might be feasible for you too. You could always try and see what grows best.
By the way, we also have a Maine Coon neuter and 3 other cats.
See you around, Jandra
