Hi from E.Sussex (Katie)

Post: # 214617Post kate682 »

I'm in Sussex, and despite living in a town, manage to have 6 chickens (daisy, isobelle, mrs biggs, samantha, emma and speckles). The eggs are great, but also they act as great pest controllers and weeders and give me great compost. I rotate them on vegetable patches, and they clear any weeds/seeds, rake it all over for me and give me a very rich soil.

I'm really lucky to have a large green house, 14 X 8, which this year has been prolific, especially in all sorts of salad/lettuce leaves. I'm currently still in lots of lettuces, chard, beetroot tops which I use as salads. I'm quite self sufficient, but also buy up any gluts of fruit and make all my own jams/preserves/chutneys etc. This year I've made preserved ginger, which is fabulous.

Next year, I have plans on converting more of the garden to vegetables, a gently gently approach with my husband over his beloved lawn wink... i managed to get one more veg patch out of it this year. I use the square foot box method, as they're easy to manage and weed etc, I have a bad back and have to be careful.

That's a little about my set up, vegetable growing has always been a hobby, but now its become a very welcome addition to the family budget. I am keen to make it more efficient, learn more things and make it more successful and, if i can, to be throughout the year.

Happy clucking
