Crunching Numbers

Post: # 283945Post doofaloofa »

We butchered the pig today and i can present to you the price of my organically fed, free range pork

Cost was €320 for bonhams(€120), bought in food (€120)and vet's bills(€85), and we rendered approximatly 30 kg of meat giving us a cost of €10.67/kg

This is 50% more than the €7/kg from the lidles for chops, but below the internet price of €14/kg for free range, and well below the internet price of €21/kg for organic

One pig died unfortunately, so if the second pig had gone on to be slaughtered we are looking at maybe €6/kg which is a great price for organic pork

i have not however factored in cost of seed potatoes and other seed that went on to provide the bulk of the fodder

That's for next year perhaps

How much lard did you render too? You could make soap or use it for cooking- mmnm Hot crust pastry :)

This one was very lean (due to diet and lifestyle choices), so that isn't an issue

I got about 20l of lard from last years two hogs, which i planned to make soap from, but never did.

Everything is very well lubricated though

We filled 9 1lb jars with lard (or whatever it's called) from half a goat doofa, so you should be able to get some, even from the slimmest piggy.

I'm sure we could, but why bother?

We still have a 12l paint bucket full of the stuff!

the dog and cats will enjoy it for some time
