Duck consignment due...

Post: # 253589Post Chants Cottage »

Hello. Me again. We're getting some Indian runner ducks tomorrow. I was wondering if its the same drill as with new chickens, ie keep them in the shed for a few days to orient them? And when / if they ever lay eggs, where do they lay 'em?

Thank you!

Mine have always laid in a nest they made themselves inside their shed. I kept them in for several days at first but they were so timid they took weeks before I could entice them down to the lake.

I wrote a story about them on my blog

I love your story! (Spoiler alert) I especially liked the bit where the ducks went back into their washing up bowls rather than risk the beautiful lake. We have picked them up now... They are lovely but unsurprisingly very nervous. I have also had to kick the bantams into the next door shed so I can pen the ducks in for a while (we are shed rich here). I have discovered the galvanised trough I had earmarked for them has rusted (which I kind of thought was the point of galvanised things - to not rust, but that's about par for the course I suppose) and has holes in the bottom of it so will give them a big buckety thing instead.
