greenhouse tomatoes... pollination?

Post: # 274193Post mrsflibble »

I know they self pollinate and I can increase yields by tapping the canes occasionally when they're in flower, but can I cross pollinate a yellow (golden sunrise) to a red plum (san marzano) and create a hybrid of utter deliciousness?!

I would think so. Genetics is a wonderful thing but u might not get what u expect. Give it a go you have nothing to loose. Sow the resulting seed and see what hapens and save the seeds from the ones u like best. Good luck.

Is it true that commercial tomato growers use vibrators to (self-)pollinate tomato plants?

I don't know what tomato growers do now, but when I was involved with growing toms under acres of glass they used captive bumble bees.
I would have though vibrating every plant would be far too labour intensive.

If you look on iPlayer there was a Radio 4 programme a couple of weeks ago about the bumble bees used by tomato growers, it was either Material World or Costing The Earth.

I think they have to use the Ann Summers method in Australia, bumble bees are not indigenous there I believe
