What seeds can be sown in the ground this month, in the SE?

Hi sususanan, I think that the answer to your question is probably not a lot looking at the weather. It's a bit too cold for things like seeds. You might get some late winter onion sets and garlic sets in the ground as both need the cold to get them growing if you want to do vegetables.

If you have a warm greenhouse or a poly tunnel with beds in then that's a different matter.

Probably if it's outside but if you have window ledge space, some pots and soil indoors where it's warm and light you can grow a lot of herbs like chives and basil, spring onions worth a try and even lettuce.

I agree with Flo, it's just about the wrong time for everything. A month or two ago you could have sown overwintering peas and broad beans, and you will be able to again in a couple of months time, but not now.
I was born and lived for many years in the south east, and I know that when the wind sets in the east you can get sub zero temperatures for weeks. You salad table would freeze solid.
Best thing to do now is sit by the fire and plan what to grow for the rest of the year.

Indeed, plan next years growing and get ready to sow tomatoes, on Boxing Day (or soon as after. They'll need to be kept somewhere relatively warm though. You can do peppers too but they need heated propagation really.

How about sprouting seeds indoors for winter salads - radishes, peas, chickpeas all make wonderful salad sprouts, among many others.
