Thanks Stonehead, I think that the supply from a generator is considered to be in some way not smooth or regular enough. My brother runs a generator, he say's there is a warning on his not to connect directly into 240v systems. With your Enfield you have your own standby electricity supply, but I gu...

Your electricity goes down and your gas central heating goes down too. I am not a sparks (electrician) but connecting a standby generator 800w (about £50) in my case to the pump etc should in theory keep the central heating going. I know the generator supply should not be hooked up to these thing...

Lots of waste paper about

I have read about making 'paper logs' from recycled waste paper. The adverts I have seen show a metal compressing gadget. Perhaps the paper is made wet like paper machier to make a solid lump. Loads of waste paper around, they say it burns well, it is after all wood. Any ideas? Would they work in a ...

Hi stew, I think no road tax is correct. Insurance, I would think a doddle as only about 10hp (guess) is needed as opposed to say 60 or so. Electric motors are far more efficient than the I(infernal) Combustion Engine where most of the energy is lost in heat. I might be wrong, but I think that most ...

'Roadkill'... foraging taken too far?

On the radio this morning a man who has not had to buy meat for 30 years (appologies to non meat eaters). He lives near bodmin moor and got into this collection of dead animals for food as a teenager when he took home a roadkill pheasant. Mum cooked it and he was off. He also collects, rabbits, deer...

Hi, the vehicle you convert to battery power remains in essence the same vehicle. ie it will conform to regs, MOT and the like. In the same way LPG in another tank in the boot does not alter the brakes or steering etc. To keep it simple, the engine is removed and an electric motor substituted. A sma...

I was a member of the battery vehicle society, (bvs.org. google), I thought of converting a golf pick up to electric power. I got as far as an electric bike! Look at the bvs website, it might be worth joining as they have many members up and down the country and meet up and discuss all sorts of thin...

Solar powered fridge? :- Buy a 12volt compressor fridge, power it with a 12volt battery and charge the battery with a solar panel. 12v compressor fridges as used in caravans and boats are not the same as the 3 way variety, 240v, 12v, gas. The 3 way variety is a very heavy user of 12v battery power s...

New Person say's Hello folks

Hello there. This is an excellent site. Other self sufficient sites I have looked at have been in the US, wide open spaces and log cabins and all of that. It works here too, save the planet and save money. I looked at a post here showing the loony prices for commercial solar water heating, why not b...
