Re: Seitan

Here's the recipe - can't remember where I got it. This is the recipe I used the first time I made seitan and even though it was hard work (and cold on your hands) it was really tasty. Sorry Lady willow but it does take quite a lot of water to clear the starch - I don't know if you could use it for ...

Re: Topsoil - where do you get yours from?!

A cautionary tale We had our previous garden landscaped by a reputable (and expensive) landscaper. He removed all the topsoil which we had nurtured and improved over a period of 15 years and sent it off in a skip. Several months later he filled our beautiful new raised beds in the kitchen garden wit...

Re: replanting

Just make sure you water them really well all this year if you do move them this early.
By the way - forgot to tell you we moved a huge blackcurrant in May (after it had set fruit) and it's doing really well.

Re: replanting

Hi The general rule is to move shrubs etc in the autumn after they've finished flowering/fruiting. However, all our fruit bushes were dug up when we had our garden landscaped (in a previous lifetime , 2 years ago). They were out of the ground, bare-rooted and only covered with a single layer of hess...

Re: 10 things I've done that you probably haven't

Hmm 1 Went to the first ever stage production of Tommy (a friend was playing bass) 2 Was on the radio as a folk singer 3 Got 200 direct works building workers in west London to support the NHS strike (1982ish) by striking for a day (their convenor was really pissed off with me) 4 My first job as an ...

Re: Seitan

I can't buy gluten flour here (France) If you've got a cheap supply of strong bread flour you can make it without the VWG. It takes a bit of time and seems a bit wasteful - basically you wash a large lump of flour dough until it becomes a much smaller lump of gluten - but it is quite satisfying to ...

I've got a great recipe for sweet potato pasties which I got from a vegan website, if you're interested.

Re: River Cottage Spring - Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is back!

Haven't voted yet because I neither love nor loathe him. A couple of years ago it would definitely have been a positive vote but now I'm not so sure. I agree he's got a bit holier than thou and probably has little concept of how many people live, but I still like the fact that he's trying to improve...

I can definitely second the recommendation for Realseeds. We bought some quinoa seeds from them. None germinated and we thought it was just us not following their instructions properly. They'd had a problem with that batch and sent a replacement packet to everyone (unbidden). You don't get service l...

http://www.cookitsimply.com/category-0020-01f50.html This has some interesting looking recipes. Funnily enough I bought 2 lambs hearts for the first time ever last week and was only this morning looking at what to do with them! My OH fancies the casserole - he's a sucker for dumplings (why am I blus...

Hi your tomatoes look great! I still get really excited when the first trusses start appearing. The promise of things to come - how sad am I! You should think about removing the side shoots (the little ones that appear where the branches leave the main stem. Otherwise (according to my Dad who grew T...

Did you get it wet? I've had some bokashi bran for ages (bought it over a year ago and it - no sign of greenness. But I don't close it too much. I wonder if keeping it airtight and a bit of moisture is encouraging something to grow. Does it still smell good? At the end of the day you're making compo...

About 30-40mins (about 180oC). Just till it looked done. It probably could have stood a little longer in the oven - the middle was a bit soft when I cut it into ribs. I didn't bother though because it was being cooked again anyway, on the barbie.

Don't a lot of bananas come from Iceland anyway? Yes really - they're Europe's largest producers of bananas! Something to do with the hot springs.
