Re: when should i pinch out tomato plants?

I very very rarely pinch out tomatoes. I just let them grow (until they disappear into the climbing rose that covers the roof of the potting shed where, presumably, they shed red tomatoes into the gutters ...). I still get loads and loads of tomatoes so it just doesn't bother me much.

Re: I have finally gone and done it....

I've got friends who sell theirs at boot sales. They make it perfectly clear that all is homemade in their kitchen. If she's unlucky, somebody from the environmental health department might turn up and inspect that kitchen... Does she have a food hygiene certificate? I know they sometimes demand th...

Re: The great rhubarb debate

I had no idea you were 'supposed' to cut off the flower stems. I've always let mine flower and they still produce leaves/stalks like mad. Mine grow all year round, too ... they're like triffids ...

Re: Tell the difference between 2 kinds of potatoes?

I would just put my hand in and have a bit of a feel. :) (I'm like that ...) If they are nice and big, or even small but round and tempting, pull a few out and eat them. If they are tiny, leave them be for a bit. Potatoes here are never sold as earlies or lates or whatever. They're just potatoes (of...

Re: Witch Flag

I love it! I wish I had one to get my neighbours' tongues wagging. LOL I have a huge flag pole sitting in my front garden but have never got around to getting a flag ... the pole is surrounded with thorny shrubs right now so not sure if I'll ever get around to it. ;)

Re: I have finally gone and done it....

SarahJane - do you have an obstructive amount of red tape in your way? I know here (Australia) you cannot sell food unless you are licensed to do it, and that means having a up to the grade kitchen (i.e. industrialized kitchen - one in which children and pets never enter etc etc etc). It is just too...

Re: Container potatoes - hype or not?

I've been trying to grow potatoes in containers for about 5 years. I have used the wire cage in straw and compost method - got them to five feet tall - but only had potatoes in the very lower portion of the cage - the rest of the growth was a waste. I've grown them in pots - again really only got sp...

Re-introducing myself after a long, long and sad hiatus

Hello everyone ... first I have to say thanks for the email about the 'bible' out in Pb. I missed the hardcover version so made sure to instantly grab the Pb copy! Am looking forward to reading it very, very much. I haven't been on for ages and ages. Things started to go very bad for me early last y...

Ah - a very old war recipe calls for gherkin vinegar (the vinegar from a jar of gherkins) to be used as salad dressing - take your lettuce (generally iceberg then), sprinkle it with sugar, and then dribble a bit of the vinegar across - it is absolutely delicious!! Who knows, maybe pickled vinegar ca...

Wee Wipes - another girly topic, I'm afraid!

I don't know if this has been covered here before, so apologies if it has. I heard about this on another forum and was instantly converted. It really applies only to women, but who knows maybe men might find it useful, too. Wee wipes - why use toilet paper for mopping up after a wee? Just cut up squ...

Something else to do with your vodka - if you use vanilla extract in your cooking or drinks, then get some yummy vanilla beans (try ebay, people often sell them there for next to nothing - I got 100 juicy beans at 30 cents each the other day), a couple of bottles, and (depending on the size of the b...

There is advice that you never ever under any circumstance use soap made with lye on your hair (my hair soap has no lye): See this link:
