Re: Supporting the Economy

I wonder what the smaller town local high streets will look like when "non essential" retail is allowed to open? Or even what shopping malls will look like? Will it be worth going for a mooch with a camera around the local villages and stop for a cuppa in any café that used to be there? Will there b...

Re: Growing in 2021

Lots of seeds in trays on the window ledge - long red peppers well on; tomatoes showing; orange scented thyme just showing; garlic chives just showing; early caulis showing; not a sign of the cape gooseberries yet. Cleared the last of a not very successful crop of horse radish - something to conside...

Write up a budget for the worst case scenario then Mr Viper. It'll keep you busy and cure the worry as you will have some plan for the worst.

Wonder if these are the geezers Green Aura? Lots of answers to Little Elf but no information as to whether they are F1 or not. I have no doubt you will tell us later in the season.

Re: Growing in 2021

I have macaroni long peppers showing through in cells on the window ledge. The rosemary seeds never came through (didn't expect as they were given from badly stored shed but always worth a try) so have replaced with yellow tomatoes. Went for a walk round the plot a couple of times last week on me cr...

There must be lots of people like me who can't shop before 5 every day. It's just they have already long given up using local shops, and just buy everything online or in supermarkets.
Exactly. And the powers that be wonder why the high street is in decline.

Re: Supporting the Economy

Forget supporting the economy. I don't think we have one. Can't order from the local garden centres online - one has a website that hasn't yet got it's ordering system up and running despite saying they do click and collect whilst the other is marking most of its stock as out of stock. The company I...

Old naval trick for inspections - we used the sticky side of Sellotape. Laborious but it did work so long as you had a bag to put the used stuff in handy when doing the job.

Re: Useful tips for starting on a self sufficientish path

I remember staying with the grandparents when I was pre-school and first school whilst mother worked. Granny was very frail but I remember seeing pictures of mother as a teenager in a dress made by granny. Next to them was a picture of me as a toddler in the dress cut down to fit. The best teddy I h...

Well done, Flo. I've heard they're quite good for tripping up those who can't do social distancing too.
Naughty! Naughty! Trouble is that would unbalance the user!

Re: Has this forum died?

The sun shines, the breeze is only a zephyr and I went for a walk all the way round the block to the local shop on me crutches to practice and to buy a can of coke. For the fresh air and exercise you understand. And to obey the physio who says to practice with the crutches.

Re: Supporting the Economy

I had to laugh at the physiotherapist who is keeping an eye on the knee exercises for the knee replacement done just before Christmas (2 days). We have snow, frost, ice and general winter weather. I said to her this week that I really needed a clear pavement outside to practice with the crutches as ...

Re: Has this forum died?

The local Facebook is following the tractor in town up hill. One of the local farmers has the contract to clear and grit the estates. Being on a north facing hill the town appreciates Tony and his big green tractor. He was defeated on Wednesday with the snow coming down behind him as fast as he clea...

Re: Has this forum died?

Hah the local Facebook is a mass of snowed under road reports, stuck cars, information on stuck buses, the local farmer who clears the uphill town roads saying it's coming down faster than he can clear, appropriate pictures to prove that going nowhere is the only possible option .... Trouble is that...

Re: Self Sufficient 2021

I think that the grandson's wedding has been put off again - was planned for May this year (moved on a year from 2020) but he's not hopeful. Think that he and the lady may make a fast visit to the nearest registry office and the party whenever things get better. Shame - obviously not going to get to...
