Re: What interesting or unusual edible plants have you grown
Planted multiplying onions in March. Good spring onion taste and they just keep multiplying (good job really or they'd be called something else), hopefully won't have to buy spring onion seed again.

Re: Award winning fruit vodka
I've made crab apple vodka and orange vodka along with sloe and damson gins but have found that starting with a decent quality spirit in the first place plays a part. I've had one batch being noticeably worse or harsher than another using the same recipe but using cheap "happy shopper " s...

Re: How many people actually grow vegatables?
A survey like this can only represent those who take part. In this case 60% of participants grow their own. Certainly we're not seeing a huge grow your own boom round here, our allotment site waiting list has dropped from 38 down to about five.

Re: Advice on butternut squash
Butternuts can take a while to get going but once they do they're like triffids. They're very hungry plants so when planting, if possible dig a hole about a cubic foot and fill it with stable muck or good home made compost. Preparing food and cooking has always been a high point and social part of the day in our house. Even now when the kids visit they're straight in the kitchen with us to get the meal ready.

Could try a sprinkling of powdered cinnamon near thresholds etc. Ants don't like to cross it.
