Re: Old shoes - what to do?

If you can't repair is there a local cobbler who might be able to do so? I know it means parting with money but maybe you prefer this to parting with the shoes.

Can you use the leather uppers for something else? Are you a crafty person?

Re: DIY Energy

At that point we decided to go to bed, as it was likely to become a complete outage and sure enough the lights went out about 15 minutes later. Yep been there and know that one well. This is the time when I look back at the 8-18 year old years with heating being a bit of coal and a lot of wood off ...

DIY Energy

Seems we have a bit of a problem on our hands here in the UK. We seem to have a spike in wholesale gas supplies and a fire at one of the French undersea cable terminals in France so that's out of commission - one less source of energy. Anyone using Gridwatch can see that ICFR3 is not supplying. Clou...

Re: Self Sufficient 2021

Well Ina my first thought was the first in this list but take your pick: Lack of moisture at the roots. ... Lack of pollinating insects, perhaps because of cold, wet or windy weather. Very hot weather, especially at night, which inhibits the germination of pollen grains, interrupting the pollination...

I'm sure a watched tree never bears fruit - like the watched pot that never boils. Freezer is full at the moment though that does include a variety of pasta type meals made up with oddments of vegetables that didn't deserve the full blanching and freezing treatment. Should be able to eat o...

Re: Thrifty self sufficiency?

I suspect that some of the attitude is bought on by being a retired truck driver - that has never been a social lifestyle and I think she did it for some 30 years.

Thrifty self sufficiency?

Thrifty living for the self sufficient types This lady is certainly not your average thrifty type but she does her best to be self sufficient with what she has or finds before she buys. Trouble is that what goes down to our allotments seems to look like this and it never seems to be what you want in an emergency.

Re: Growing in 2021

Thing is - all the promises from the met office around here of rain does come with the warning that it will be showers and those won't be evenly spread over the area. In other words, thunder and hail 5 miles away in one direction, heavy showers 2 miles away in another. And the heavy showers seem to ...
