Is there anything that chickens can't or shouldn't eat? I know they are omnivorous and that they shouldn't be given raw or perhaps cooked meat but is there anything else that they shouldn't be given We want them to be as organic as possible and have access to organic pellets from a local farmer who ...

Re: 101 professions for a self-sufficientish, thinking person

We have rented a lovely place that's ideal for us but the payoff has just about g...

becks77 wrote:, love the run
so do I as it cost me a grand total of £2.49 for a load of screws. Everything else is off freecycle or recycled from something else including an old boat. Maybe not as pretty as some but as it is hidden in the trees and the hens couldn't care less does it matter?

At last we collected the 3 hens from our friendly farmer neighbour today. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s89/bodrighy/misellaneous/th_P5060679-1.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s89/bodrighy/misellaneous/th_P5060675-1.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s89/bodrighy/misellaneous/th_P506...

Re: I saw a Hoopoe this morning!

Nothing as exotic as that here in Cornwall. We do have a jay that has started coming in and collecting the seed that the tits are spilling onto the grass. Haven't seen one for years.

Re: Decorating

I did my bedroom like that when I was a teenager a few years ago ( ) I did it in orange with black stipres. Lasted about two weeks, drove me nuts. Glad to see that you have a better sense of colour.

Re: If it's not slugs...

We lost all our courgettes the other day when our landlady's 'cute' little lambs got in the garden and bit off the rhubarb leaves and scoffed the courgettes. All SWMBO had to say was "They looked really cute skipping around the garden Mint sauce :angryfire: Mint sauce :angryfire: Mint sauce :an...

Re: Density of chickens?

Managed to get 501 of chicken wire from Freecycle today so the hens will ahve a larger run than I expected. It will be about 20' x 10' and totally full of weeds, a few bushes and shrubs and part of an old rockery. I will be laying mesh down on the outside floor which will soon get grown through with...

Re: corgettes

They taste totally different. Slugs and snails love them as well. They'v had all ours already so we'll have to resow.

They also freeze well with a quick blanching.
