Re: Wild Photo Competiton win The Wild Life or Wild Drugs

I'm impressed - you've taken a photo with one hand while balancing a butterfly on the other! I love the echo of the colours between flower and butterfly too.

Re: Wild Photo Competiton win The Wild Life or Wild Drugs

I'm a bit embarrassed to be adding yet another picture of sexual congress - at least I think that's what is going on. The larger bee is a serious size - over an inch long (though I didn't think to put something by them as a benchmark - d-oh) and the smaller one is attached to her at the tail, and th...

Re: what are you harvesting?

Ohhhhh nooooooo turnips! :pukeright:  I hated turnips till my allotment neighbour gave me a few spare seedlings that he thinks are called 'Veitchy red' though as I can't find them on the web as a variety, I'll have to nag him to look at the packet. These have been tender and peppery even when ...

Re: Help!My beans have black fly!!!!

I was very anxious to get a card through the letterbox on Tuesday saying that a 'large package' had been taken back to the Post office and I must wait 72 hours before collecting it. Presumably it was the ladybird house - and would the inhabitants survive that long? BUT - tonight, a little package on...

Re: Plastic Bottle Greenhouse

OMG - 2 months since I meant to get some photos for you. .. I've acquired a Flickr account and uploaded some photos. I use baths to grow it - the plants seem to like it, the slugs find it harder to clamber up and over the edge and they hold more compost (and need watering less often). However, I am ...

Re: Wild Photo Competiton win The Wild Life or Wild Drugs

My word - there are some spectacular photos on here. I especially like Silver Ether's - but that might be partly the Esme Weatherwax quote (Pratchett fan) and the snail looks positively noble! I spent a ridiculous amount of time photographing the frenetic activity of ladybirds among my blackfly-infe...

Re: What's going on with this garlic?

Cheers - that's helpful advice.
By the way - is the stem thickness related to the size of the bulb? They do seem to correlate (in which case, I have one or two really big bulbs still in the ground and the rest are pathetically small...)

Re: What's going on with this garlic?

One of the Iberian Wight went quicker than the Thermidrome - but only one (so far). There were 6(ish) of the Thermidrome, so three times as many pro rata

Re: Help!My beans have black fly!!!!

Hi,well I have checked my beans and yes it looks like it worked! THanks for doing the experimentation. Now I just have to raid the washing up bottle, remove all ladybirds (I have practice, since I had to do this before burning the culled beans) and make a decision about whether I'll leave one for t...

Re: Best flavoured tomato ?

Have you looked at the Real Seeds site? I bought some different varieties a couple of years ago and the 'early bush' variety was a decent size and very tasty. It was one of the bad summers, though, so they weren't particularly early. The storing tomatoes (colgar) were an interesting experiment - eat...

Re: Re-using potato bags after harvesting

Are you talking about bags you've grown potatoes in - perhaps the square ones that are sold for the purpose? I'd think you can plant pretty much anything in those - they're nice and deep
