Hi flowergirl, Have you tried Real Seeds? They have Sutherland Kale which is a large flat-leaved variety. I got some to try this year. Sadly I have no spare seed but i found the Real Seeds company very good to deal with. All their seeds are bred for the British climate and no F1 hybrids, so they enc...

That sounds really nice... any chance you could get the recipe from your sister? A lot of the OHs family are teetotal in fact, as well as OH, so we aren't looking for a boozy cake (though OH eats a nice fruit cake I do which uses a good drop of stout in it for flavour). I think we'll have two tiers,...

I have Dorkings and Barred Rocks to cross for meat. Pure breeds will mature much later than commercial broiler chicks - they are bred for longevity, whereas broilers are bred for fast weight gain. Your pure breeds might mature in the 6 - 9 month bracket, broiler chicks probably about 2 months free r...

Wedding cake - gluten, dairy and alcohol free

Hi Guys,

My mum offered to make us a wedding cake. When I told her of some of the guests' allergies, she nearly freaked   ! I know one of you (or maybe several!) have some fabulous recipes up your sleeves, could someone recommend a cake recipe that fits the bill?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, there's a website I found through another forum which explains with pictures:

Lots of people swear by them, once you get the hang of it they are easy to do.

I keep chickens for meat and eggs, there are plenty of dual purpose breeds out there. I've got a Marans cockerel with Silver Grey Dorking and Barred Plymouth Rock girls. The SG Dorking would be a good choice if you just wanted one breed, as the males were developed to be docile so when fattening a g...

Prunes are great with rabbit - I used to live off rabbit and prune casserole in Kent when we were being given loads of rabbit. I would discarde the front from the shoulders onwards 'cos there's not that much meat, chop the loin and back half into four (two leg portions and two loin portions) and cas...

Some thoughts: 1. In many wholemeal recipes I've come across, a small amount of crushed vitamin C tablet is added, which is supposed to improve the rising. 2. I would echo the info about time as well, in fact if you leave bread to rise for a longer time at a lower temperature, it is beneficial to th...

Only under cover - I sowed leeks in a big pot a couple of weeks ago and just left it in the cold frame, the seedlings are all coming up now but it'll be a while before they go out. I sowed some optimistic salad leaves in a pot and wrapped in a plastic bag, that's also in the coldframe. Broad beans a...

Egg fried rice, filling and nutritious. Boil your rice and let it cool. Whisk up an egg with a bit of soy sauce, heat a frying pan or wok with some groundnut/sunflower oil and throw the rice in, turning it all over to coat in the oil. Add the egg mixture and stir vigorously until the egg is cooked. ...

That new Sacla advert was instantly annoying from about three seconds in the first time I saw it. Now when that stubbly Italian puts his head right up to the camera and goes "SA.CLA." I just want to PU.NCH.HIM. :angryfire:
