Re: Sweet pepper failure
The biggest prob I find, with any pepper is white fly.As with most plants,it's the rot that sets in after white fly damage that ruins the plant rather than the aphid per se.I've no idea what burrows holes through the fruit, but aphid damage shows(before the rot) as sort of tiny scaley marks on the fru...

Re: rats in the chicken coop
Round here the Council Rat men are free of charge (albeit ,a bit weird).I take the point about drowning, but TBH,ratbait isn't that humane either.

TBH,DnD,I think your problem,if anything will be to avoid it getting TOO hot.We plant Melons on the compost heap.

Re: Fly agaric
We had a stand of old Silver Birch at the old place, and the attendant lines of Fly Agaric,I could never bring myself to pick them.A bit tangential,as ever, but isn't it strange that a tree as crappy as a S birch(short lived, lousy firewood etc.etc)attracts such amazing flora. And Fauna, come to think ab...

Re: Old dogs........
Mate,I have thought about that, there's a education thing round here for old Grunters called the university of the 3rd age,or something, but they mostly do stuff like local history and such. I think it's inevitable that I'll go down the Youtube route, which is a shame(I s'pose a lot of this is just reg...

Hmm..DND,I'm a simple bloke, the WI seems a bit frightening, ditto the evening classes, nearest would be best part of an hour away.
Rachel, there is a sewing shop in town(actually about 90 yards from my front door(!))so I'll ask in there.I s'pose it's going to be Youtube, inthe end.

Old dogs........
OK...Not so active these days, and I want to learn something new.To be precise,I want to learn how to use a sewing machine.I'm sure most of you will snort and say easy ,and my old man, when he became crippled at about my age taught himself, and ended up making all us kids clothes, but he never showed me...

Re: Polytunnel growing v outside growing
Well you've stole my thunder,'cos that's exactly what I was going to suggest! Loads of occasions I've seen tunnels set up/down slopes for that very reason (and if we just listened to the professionals,we'd still be paddling around in dug outs.) edit: Think I'd rather be paddling around in a dug out ...

Re: How big is your fruit cage and what have you got in it?
I know I'm always on about these people(and I honestly don't work for them!)but check out the Frank D Matthews site/catalogue.Many people round here grow cherries in tunnels, they like 'Penny','Celeste' and ,of course,Stella.I'm not sure if they can easily send overseas, but that can always be circumn...

Re: Polytunnel growing v outside growing
Most commercial tunnels, admittedly bigger than we are likely to want, nevertheless have some sort of system to move air through the tunnel on still days. This might be worth copying, what do you think?
