Growing Chilis under LED lighting

I've just bought an LED light from ebay (£20 of your english notes) to increase the available light during the early morning hours and later evening to get the chili plants underway.

I've seen several reviews that say they're pretty rubbish, anyone had any experience with them?

Re: growing ginger

I've tried and had little success. It needs a very temperate verging on tropical climate. as Davie Crockett above said, I left it one or two days late in the greenhouse and it was dead. Good luck! It's easy to grow, just not easy to keep alive :)

Re: Earth oven

had a big burn this weekend in my earth oven. The clay and sawdust insulating layer caught fire due to cracks in the oven itself. Temps were hot. Very hot. First time I'd got it quite that hot and we were able to cook about 9-10 pizzas (took about 2-3 mins to cook) on a baking tray one at a time. I ...

Re: Water storage on the cheap

Well mine has just reached 1000 litres and is now starting to overfill - it'll soon start draining to the top of the one next to it.

The water still smells fine!

Re: Pallets - how to take them apart. x post

Sorry to bring this to the top, but I've got something to add having read an instructable on using pallet wood - specifically look at the comments where the guy has made a tool for extracting the wood...

Re: Water storage on the cheap

was hoping just boxing them in would sort the problem - I've never noticed smells coming from any of my waterbutts in the past, so was hoping the same would be said here! When I used to have a 220ltr butt I would use one of those hand watering my plants a day, I don't know if I was over watering, bu...

Re: Rhubarb failure

I'll follow the split and 'pack in manure' advice from Tim - I've never worked out how to add manure, . Take bag o'manure, dump over top. Best time is before the crown starts sending up shoots, or alternatively if your one is currently stem less, now. I actually planted my original rhubarb into a b...

Something I'll have to think about in a couple of years when my backyard orchard gets going!

Re: waark.com, green living and self sufficientish blog

Thanks Maggie - I didn't actually read your post before I'd done it - I belong to several forums and it's part of my sig on many of them, but believe it or not I'd never bothered to do it here. Sorted now though!

Did you check out the site?

Re: Gardening and Camera

Thanks for having a look! - deficient in pictures? I only put one or two up, more if I think a process needs it etc. I do videos with my timelapse camera because, well, they're timelapse :) I did have a looky on your blog as I'd seen a few posts on the forum. I didn't really 'get' the image link (I ...

Re: Storing apples

I use an old defunct upright freezer, although a dead fridge works just as well. Line the shelves with newspaper and just place the apples in one layer if possible. Fridges that are 'off' smell - does this happen if it's filled with apples? Or does it smell apple-y? Or more importantly does the CO2...

Water storage on the cheap

In my house I was having flooding problems, so knowing that I'd just planted an orchard and was planning to set up some raised veg beds, I needed an alternative source of water - and therefore storage. I looked into digging a hole and buying a 3,000 litre underground tank. That ought to sort the pro...

Re: Storing apples

I've never done it. My grandfather seemed to have the art - they had a purpose build shed next to the back door. It had flat shelves in made of plyboard and the apples were just placed onto newspaper sheets on top of the plyboard. Seemed to work for him and some of those apples were still there 4 mo...

Re: Rhubarb failure

when they get old like us, they get lazy. Dig it up about nowish, take a spade to the little blighter. Mine was huge - about 1.5 metres2 Split into four (I literally just hacked it straight down with a spade - it looked like four slices of cake), I repacked with plenty of fresh manure (not even rott...

Re: cooking oil and fat

a lot of the problem seems to be draining the water off first, I thought about some sort of oil filter fitted with a coffee filter paper - but you've still got to dispose of the filter papers as well.

Ho hum. No recycling plants near me unfortunately.
