Re: Quiet

Hi guys, I've had extra trouble logging in the last few days, and I'm getting very busy now that the weather is a little better, so not much time. It's good to see some of you are still around   - I was able to get in this morning as you can see lol, but must get out to work now. b...

Re: Black salsify ...advice anyone?

I concur with sleepyowl's comments. Easy to grow but I wasn't impressed with them as a vegetable. However, I don't think much of asparagus either so you may not agree

Re: ...use a propagating frame?

Sounds like heating cables buried in sand, with rod type thermostat. If you've inherited it and it's not been used for a long time then you need to make sure that it has RCD type electrical safety cut-out in the circuit somewhere. Apart from that, I'd say water the sand well, making sure that all ca...

Re: Growing peppers in an unheated greenhouse in the UK

I think it depends a lot on the micro-climate where your greenhouse is. I have only a tunnel in a field, it's exposed and chilly, catches frosts badly and cold winds from all directions. If you are in a sheltered spot in a town (but not too shady) the temperature will be several degrees higher most ...

Re: Hi guys

Hi Russ, good to see you around again. Not many people bothering to use this site now due to login problems. They are all on facebook but I'm not going there as I think it's totally against 'ish principles. Can't wait for it to stop raining and blowing to get on with some outside stuff. Best wishes,...

Re: Pink and Blue

My daughter was taking her little girl, (aged 18months) to buy a camping chair. She was quite upset when the little one was insistent on having the pink one

Re: New EU seed regulations

Thanks for all that info guys. Not sure that I can really understand what's going on, but I think it's likely that it's being pushed for by the giant agri-chemical/biotech companies, who are trying to twist the legislation in their favour. Grrr, I hate the Monsantos of this world!!!! - and all the f...

Yes, the original series was good. A friend has their book, 'Practical Self-sufficiency' and it's excellent. Better than the old John Seymour one really.

I have to collect about half a ton every week, whether I want it or not. It pales a bit when it's p**ing down and freezing, and my ground is ankle deep in mud :sunny:

Re: Self sufficient 2014

I always try to be as self-sufficient as possible. Just can't beat the satisfaction of eating your own food. If you have room, grow winter squash, green acorn(small, but one of the best flavour), blue pumpkins(crown prince, Musque De Provence)- They are a marvellous standby (and regular veg) all thr...
