I saw on the tv show 'heaven's garden,' that toilet roll inserts can be filled with compost, then carrot seeds can go in and germinate, then be planted straight out....

Do they fully biodegrade quick enough? Or would you steer well clear?

Yes, my spelling is abominable.

I mean stakes, as in huge pillars of wood hammered into the ground for support. You know, like you stake a tree so it doesn't fall over....

I'm still envious of their compost-a-loo.

Two stakes and wire.....but why why why?

I've noticed a pattern in other people's fruit orchards. They take two massive steaks, and tie (spelling?) wire between them. But why? Is the intention to train the tree/bush along the horizontal wire? But that wouldn't benefit anyone....it would just look silly. Could some kind self-sufficientish e...

Alcina you are a goddess. You were, however, a litte vague with how you chitt seeds..I understand how to achieve such results with big seeds like beans but how would you do it with, for example, carrot seeds? You also didn't really specify what 'scarifying' is... But I thank you for your reply, obvi...

Seed priming...friend or foe?

I've been reading (yes, that's right) about 'seed priming.' Apparently you dry the seed in water or something to that effect?

Can someone explain it to my simple mind, and if anyone has actually tried it, it would be cool to hear how it went.

Photos are a self-sufficient man's best friend...

Just a suggestion... I love reading all the articles about all the herbs and vegetables. And yet I think it is lacking on essential ingredient... Photos! Surely if you grow all these plants you could take photos so people could see what they look like? It would certainly put a smile on my face  .

What do you mean if there is no pressure?

You have to get all the air out?

And yes, you are a cheap-skate.

Bottles for cordial...show me the light

Just contemplating making some elderflower cordial, even bought citric acid (and then proceeded to tell my parents I'm a heroine addict). But where do I get bottles? I heard plastic bottles go better in the freezer, so I guess I'd need to buy some. Surely I couldn't just use my old coke bottles? I l...

Parsley: Wanted dead or alive

What is going on?! Parsley is officially the most irritating herb to grow in the world! I've tried so many times to tease them into germinating...to no avail. I read about this technique called 'seed priming'...has anyone ever tried that? How does it work? I don't have the patience for parsley, and ...
