Re: un-vaccinated children

Not sure what date this is from the BBC website - but I think RiffRaff was talking about France with regard to MMR: In France MMR vaccination is compulsory in pre-school children yet total coverage stands at only 85%. Like every other MMR-using country, France does not recommend the injection be div...

Re: un-vaccinated children

I've had all the jabs. I was very ill after the diptheria jab when I was a baby. The doctor was called and my nightdress had to be cut off me as my body was so swollen, but I got better. I have had problems with tetanus in the past, as it was made from something to do with horses and I had an allerg...

Re: I hate you New Zealand!

They look disgusting from your photo. I'm glad I've never seen any here in Brittany or when I was in Cornwall.

Sowing wild flowers

This year I have decided not to have my usual large potato patch - I have a small free bag of potatoes to come from my local garden shop, but shan't grow any others. I'm giving up on potatoes as I have decided to grow wild flowers in their space. I've bought a premixed bag from another garden centre...

Re: Llamas and alpacas

My goats haven't protected my hens and ducks from the fox I'm afraid. Neither did they manage to protect their own kid who had his stomach ripped out by something one night when he was six months old. Goats are lovely though but uncastrated males are very, very, very stinky. Once castrated they are ...

Re: Backyard Aquaculture (fish farming)

I've just bought two life size plastic herons for my garden pond. Maybe there's something similar to suit you.

Sprouting seeds and pulses

I have never sprouted anything so far, but would like to start doing this. Has anyone any advice on this topic please? I have bought some dried lentils and chickpeas at the local supermarket and was going to try with these and a mayo jar with a mesh material and rubber band.

Re: allergy to onions & garlic

I put cayenne in soups which gives a little or big kick depending on the amount I add. Thomzo suggests chive flowers, but chives are members of the allium family.

Re: I'm pleased with my Coloured Egg layers this year

It's all your fault, darkbrowneggs, you made me remember how much I loved coloured eggs! I collected a trio of Cream Legbars at the weekend, so when they come into lay I shall have blue eggs again.

Re: First life of 2012 - What are you sowing?

After Sarah's post I have sown by the biodynamic calendar. Thank you, Sarah. So far, several sorts of mixed lettuce, sweet peppers, yellow pearshaped tomatoes, onions, land cress, piment, and have sorted all my seeds out, so ready to go in my newly cleared polytunnel. Don't you just love sowing time!

Re: I'm pleased with my Coloured Egg layers this year

They're brilliant. I am very jealous as the fox took my blue egg laying hens in the early summer and I don't have any Marans at the moment either. There's something really lovely about a display like yours.

Re: Wood from woods!!!

I have today dragged a huge fallen branch into my field which was lying partly on the verge and partly on the lane opposite my field entrance. After strong winds there are lots of small and large branches down and the mainly one car lanes are too narrow here to have debris making them even narrower....

Re: Tomato Types

I only ordered one sort from Suttons, Tigerella, and there was a note in with the other seeds they did send saying "not available". I didn't order any others as I get so many seedlings coming up where last years tomatoes were that I probably won't need any more.

Re: mushrooms

What are you using OTM? and where did you buy the spore please? I grew button mushrooms back in the 70s under the stairs and they were very successful, but fancy doing something different now - also I don't have an understairs cupboard, so they'd have to be in the cold area of the gym or the garage.
