Re: getting some seeds on the go

My tomatoes are germinating now. I sowed them a week or ten days ago in clear pastic egg boxes with a hole in the bottom of each section. These are just the right size for my windowsill. I put them on the kitchen windowsill and considering it's cold tile and my kitchen is unheated (although south fa...

Re: government sponsored green con ??

When I first heard about this scheme I thought it sounded just right for us. Our house is very inefficient because we have an old boiler, no cavity wall and a poor radiator system. The boiler scrappage scheme is no good because £400 off isn't much help if you haven't got the rest of the money to buy...

Re: Beetroot. Why do I bother?

These suggestions are fantastic - thanks. I can't believe that I could freeze the cooked beet and didn't know. Sounds perfect for my just-for-me portions. Also cooking in the microwave and grating raw on salads. I'd like to try the cake but will have to think of a way of selling it to the family who...

Beetroot. Why do I bother?

Don't get me wrong I really do love beetroot. I've sown some seeds but find myself peering at the compost half hoping they won't grow. Trouble is I'm the only person in the family who actually likes it. Husband will eat small but very infrequent offerings but that's it. Problem is that I like it coo...

Re: ...grow mushrooms

Useful feedback but not putting me off as i like a challenge. I've put them in a bucket under a shelf in the conservatory (which has a brick base) and is south facing. Today, amazingly we actually have sun so its warm. Tonight is another matter but i've put the bucket in a coal sack inside a sainsbu...

Re: ...grow mushrooms

Thanks. That does look like a lovely place to visit so I'll pop up there and ask one dayl Perhaps if I remember when the bluebells are flowering. Anyway I brought some of the dried mushroom seeds yesterday (£3.49) and am going to have a go according to the instructions. They say the horse manure mix...

Re: Banish Plastic

I just want to put a little word in here on behalf of supermarket workers. I've just finished a temp contract in a supermarket and found the job pretty horrible. The workers, including cashiers have their performance timed and get told off if they don't work quickly enough. Working conditions have r...

...grow mushrooms

I've googled a bit and found some horribly complicated instructions involving sterilisation and and very scientific equipment. Is there a simple way? I've got some well rotted horse manure and a warm dark place but wonder what sort of container I should use. Also I've seen some seeds in homebase but...

Re: PSB- May I ask why?

I've got my first ever crop almost ready to eat. It's been buried in snow, several times, pecked at by pigeons and still looks really healthy. I'm really pleased because its our first year in this house and getting a crop in March is great. Funny thing is that I've got loads coming on but have never...

Re: no-dig gardening for idiots

Well I'm trying this on a section of VERY neglected ground. Full of weeds, bits of tree root and who knows wha else. Like you I'm skint so spending zero money on it. I don't know if this method is going to work but I have been researching a bit and come up with the following plan. 1. Lay cardboard d...

Re: Hello

Hello and thanks for the welcomes. My problems were caused by a muddle over my password. I got it wrong a couple of times then I had to enter the letters and numbers in the box because I'd exceeded the allowed number of attempts. I entered the characters without realising I had to re-enter name and ...

Re: allotment advice

Hello, I'm new here but have had experiences similar to yours. My advice is keep things very simple for the first year. It's really tough taking on a new plot because once the weeds start growing they grow fast and its reallly hard to keep up with them. I don't know how big your plot is but if this ...

Hello

I've been reading this board for months and find it very interesting informative. Unfortunately I've had trouble joining but amazingly this morning did something right so I'm in. I live in Eastbourne, East sussex and have a decent garden for the first time ever really although I've had allotments be...
