Re: well proud of myself

It is such a great feeling to eat the stuff you have grown yourself. And they definitely taste better!

You are right to be proud.

Re: Travellers...advice needed

Good for you. I'm sure you'll have a great time. I have done a year in Japan and am currently on a year in Korea teaching English. I totally understand what you mean about the buying clothes part. I had to bring enough trousers to last all the time although it is possible to buy t-shirts and I have ...

Re: Loads of aphids all over broad beans and their pods

I can explain the jam theory. The ants 'farm' the aphids because they like to eat the sticky honeydew that aphids produce. It is very sweet which the ants like. In exchange the ants protect the aphids from other predators (not because they are altruistic but because they want to keep their sweet foo...

Re: Too many strawberries!

I find it hard to believe that too many strawberries are possible. I love them and always eat tons of them in season. However, I would also suggest freezing them if you do have too many. When I was younger we used to pick loads and freeze them and then I would just eat them out of the freezer frozen...

Re: Growing sweet potatoes

I managed to successfully grow some plants. I took a sweet potato and put it in a box of sand in the airing cupboard. When it had sprouted (about 6/7 sprouts) I cut the potato up so that each sprout was a single block and planted it then. I put them in a cloche to increase the temperature and the pl...

Re: Free to enter Competiton for Everyone win books

My book has arrived too. I just need to find some time to read it now! It looks really cool - I love that old style penguin paperback look.

Thanks Andy and Penguin.

Re: Vegetarian weightloss

I can't really help with the diet suggestions but a friend of mine had a good system for encouraging exercise. They had a game console and any member of the family (including the grown ups) had to run 1km on the treadmill for every hour spent playing on the games console. I thought that was an excel...

Re: Free to enter Competiton for Everyone win books

Excellent! I never win anything either so am very happy.

I would love to keep chickens in the not too distant future so the book will be very useful.

Re: In an emergency......

Please note, this should be a bleach that only contains sodium hyperchlorate (for its free chlorine when combined with water) NO fragrances colours or other bumf. should smell of chlorine and chlorine only. Use only a few drops per L and leave it to stand, it can then be poured back and fourth betw...

Re: In an emergency......

We also have some bleach handy which can be added to the water should we need to drink it and find it has floaters! . :pukeright: But probablly the same as our chlorine tabs right enough! Yes, you just need something to kill the germs and they will do it just as well. I am not sure how you bring yo...

Re: HOT!

We have been seeing how hot it is over there on the news here. I feel for you! It has been quite nice today at only 26C. We are due to have the same heat wave here in Christchurch but it is only going to be 34C tomorrow, although that is still way too hot for me! We are not expected to get cooler we...

Re: In an emergency......

Anyone got any thoughts on water supply cuts? Why not just store a few days supply of water? Here in NZ we are encouraged to be prepared for an emergency situation and to have an emergency kit. Here is what is supposed to be included in the kit and I think we have all or most of it. http://www.gett...

Re: Advice on learning to sew and knit

The good thing about learning to knit is that once you have the basics you can easily make a scarf and have something to show for it! I have been knitting for so long that I can't remember how I learned but I do remember it was for a school project - we had to make something so I decided to knit a j...
