Hi John. To carry out some experiments with wind turbines it is often best to go with the tried and tested first. The simplest of small wind generators uses a 'sturmey archer' bycycle dynamo,called a dynohub. (front wheel type) See 'gotwind.org' and REUK.co.uk. (Also some new bycycle dynamos on ebay...

If you produce more power than your batteries can handle at any time it could be dumped into 12v water heating, perhaps. I saw a 12v 600w heating element on ebay. New idea to me but likely common knowledge to real off gridders.

It does focus your mind on supplying more of your own power. I would of thought that switching suppliers would have kept them on their toes, with u switch and all of those companies about. I have just switched from Powergen to Atlantic Electric and Gas. (Powergen have a record of billing mistakes) F...

Martin the glass matt type batteries at £65 sound like a good deal and perhaps similar to the elecsols that have some sort of carbon mat technology. I thought your £45 batteries looked good value, not suitable for hooking up to wind/solar? tempting at that price. Titch You have taken a very br...

Olive Oil Lamps

Had to use some candles recently, some power cuts coming our way so this might be of some use to know perhaps. Lehmans.com (american site) show a range of Olive oil lamps. Basically glass jars with lids (to turn them off and store them) They say that Olive oil is odourless and safe, it won't catch f...

Like all that stuff, Muddypause. Have a preferance for the banjos as in 'dueling banjos', like that 'deliverance' film sequence, its on google video. Also on google video a film clip I like, type in:- 'bullitt' and see the great sequence with Steve McQueen, growling V8s, chasing through the streets ...

Stonehead, I am convinced that 12v is the way to go. Part of the process is giving up on power hungry items. Pedal the washing machine etc. 2 days ago I had a consumer unit failure, a burn out. I decided that the consumer replacement was a bit beyond my capability also going to sell up some time. I ...

Watchdog, The other night, any one see that? Company flogging solar hot water systems and making wild claims. One claim, 'that it was designed by Daimler Benz', the same as the one my neighbour brought (see other post) People were led to believe that they could make big savings on hot water and 'cen...

Driving auto alternaters with a drill brought home to me the huge resistance of these things. I think for real results buy a manufactured turbine new, (good to play around with stuff first though) lots of competition now with those American ones on ebay, for example. even a secondhand one. Look out ...

Wow, Paradox, a like mind. Lots of stuff available on ebay. Small turbines to play with that give a little power, and more serious ones that are possibly a better way to go for not too much money. It may be possible to use a vehicle cooling fan attached to a small cycle hub motor. I have got interes...

Hard act to follow chadspeed but;
A true village community, commons, lakes, windmill, view of valley (even when sitting up in bed!) local post office, village shop where people know your name. Transport, buses, station etc. Not bad for a London Borough.
Fancy France though.
