Re: Duck consignment due...

I love your story! (Spoiler alert) I especially liked the bit where the ducks went back into their washing up bowls rather than risk the beautiful lake. We have picked them up now... They are lovely but unsurprisingly very nervous. I have also had to kick the bantams into the next door shed so I can...

Re: Asparagus for beginners?

Darn it, fresh out of dead donkeys. I'm perfectly happy to devote time and space and just want to give myself the best chance at actually establishing the bed properly! I will get myself some nice posh crowns. I had also thought about seaweed (as you do). We've mulched and manured the beds the aspar...

Re: Asparagus for beginners?

Crikey. I suppose that's my fear, that you invest so much time and for.... nothing. But then I suppose that's part of growing stuff, that the success you have is so much sweeter because of the risk that it might not work... but with most things you don't have to wait three or four years to realise s...

Duck consignment due...

Hello. Me again. We're getting some Indian runner ducks tomorrow. I was wondering if its the same drill as with new chickens, ie keep them in the shed for a few days to orient them? And when / if they ever lay eggs, where do they lay 'em?

Thank you!

Re: Errant Chicken Mystery

Ha ha!! I imagine you mean the "BUUUKKKK buk buk buk buk BUUUUUUKKK buk buk buk" kind of noise, trinder, which they seem to do sometimes but not apparently all the time. Or maybe I don't hear it... Anyway I seem to have had four eggs again today so all back to normal. Back to plan A, the bantam plan...

Asparagus for beginners?

Hello all I'm just in the process of sorting out a vegetable garden from (very) scratch, and it's fair to say I am a bit of a novice. I would really like to get an asparagus bed going. As I know I'm going to leave them for a long time I want to give myself the best chance for a harvest I can so I wo...

Re: Hello from Whitestone - ivy 'n' bramble capital of the w

Well, I really think it is a case of not if but when re: piggywigs. I wanted some as soon as we moved in but I was dissuaded. May have been for the best as it really would have been a mudbath around here if we had. Bad enough with me other half joyriding his newly acquired battered old pickup throug...

Re: Errant Chicken Mystery

Hmm thanks for your advice everybody but after a day or two of keeping my beady eye on them I suspect she's not broody. They've all been around pretty much of the day, (one of them snuck off for an hour or so) and none of them are being in the least bit grumpy. Only got two eggs though today so I do...

Re: hugelkultur?

We're in the process of sorting out the veg garden at our new house and my husband keeps going on about hugelkultur beds. I wanted raised beds anyway but the actual hugelkultur 'beds' are MASSIVE! I wondered about shade on the 'wrong' side of the bed, and the shadows they cast must be pretty substan...

Re: Hello from Whitestone - ivy 'n' bramble capital of the w

Thank you for your kind covetous words, MuddyWitch!! I think I was being a bit over optimistic with the t-shirt. My jumper was back on after 10 mins. It is a great place but on the other hand it will take us approximately 423 years to get it in order. Just as well I'm used to general disorder...

I'll see if I can follow her. How long would I need to keep them all in for before she made a nest? I'm certainly up for the idea of chicky wickies. Ta muchly!

Re: Errant Chicken Mystery

Ooh, well I did wonder, but she seems to come back for long periods of time and I wasn't sure if this was normal broody behaviour. If this is the case is there a danger the eggs could have frozen? It's been absolutely flippety freezing around here recently. (And everywhere else, I know...) Oh well, ...

Errant Chicken Mystery

I wonder if anyone might shed some light on what might be going on with one of my chickens... I have four Light Sussex chickens and a Buff Orpington Cockerel. They are locked in a shed at night but during the day they go wherever they flipping well want. The other night one of the chickens went miss...

Hello all and thanks for your lovely welcome! Yep, we've certainly got enough to be getting on with... so I thought I'd hit it all square on and clear a few piffling flower beds of, you've guessed it, ivy and brambles... But from small acorns mighty oak trees grow. And don't I know it. We've got abo...

Re: mushrooms

Yes, I popped in yesterday for a 'browse' and ended up with an armful of stuff including Anya potatoes and shallots. Very exciting! Absolute bargains too, which is great for a novice like me... Not sure if there's a downside to them being so cheap though? Last year I was recommended Arran Pilot pota...
