Re: Wee wee on the compost heap

Wow! That looks the business mate! Much nicer than ours, pretty inspiring. . . And i like your shower idea - we haven't got one, so i'm still going round to mates' houses for showers . . . but i reckon the 12v pump idea could do the trick . . .

Re: Comfrey

Hey, cheers for the link mike . . . That looks like a quality website too. I'll be making use of the comfrey, then. My comfrey must be the self-seeding type, cos it's holding it's own against bindweed, brambles & nettles, actually it's spreading. And if anyone needs seeds when it's seed time, i reck...

Comfrey

Hi there, One of my mates moved away a couple of years ago, and her gardening space - close to mine - has been lunched out ever since. . . I was having a poke about in there the other day, discovered many yummy things under the bindweed. The comfrey has run amok, though. She grows herbs for medicine...

Re: solar power = wallet-friendly in 2013

Mate, okay I'm not a big electric-user, but I spent £350 on a 65w solar panel, and that provides for all my needs at the moment. . . (basically, to be fair, only laptop, mobile, amp, and lighting) . . . In the winter, I have to use the petrol-gennie to make up the slack, maybe two litres a week . . ...

Re: Open fireplace

I've always wondered. . . is it more environmentally-friendly to have a single wood-burner heating a very small space with recycled (&renewable) wood (from skips). . . but releasing smoke from the chimney, or to use mains electric gas / electric from a coal-burning power station to heat a whole hous...

Re: 12v madness

Ello mate, Not quite sure I understood. . . you're living in a house, and lotsa yer appliances are 12v? You're using a sorta transformer-device thang to get 12v? Not sure that's a very efficient use of power. . . yer gonna lose some oomph in the AC/DC malarky. . . Me, I'm totally 12v, I reckon it's ...

Re: grow potatoes in pots

I've been told (yep, hearsay) about a method which involves growing potatoes in car tyres . . . In which you wait til the plant reaches a certain stage, whack on another tyre of compost, and repeat the process. Apparently you get a new crop of potatoes in each addition, and sorta eat your way down f...

Re: Ish Springwatch 2011

Hmmm my daffs are still only just emerging, some of then have maybe done an inch . . . But then, i planted them late, the dogs dug them up and replanted according to canine aesthetic, and some had to contend with me unearthing them to check on their progress . . . The tulips are thriving tho . . . D...

Re: Buying chickens

My mum keeps chickens and is getting a couple more this week. She is having hens who are evictees from a battery farm - apparently, when they lay fewer than 6 eggs a week they are regarded as being used-up, and are slaughtered. She says they're a bit traumatised and need to re-learn how to be a chic...

I'd endorse that, I've grown chillies in a pot on a sunny window-sill. . .

Re: Wind turbines on your door step?

Maybe a bit more carrot and a bit less stick . . . Cheaper electricity, maybe, for people who have to live in real physical proximity to turbines. Myself, i like the way they look and reckon them an improvement on non-sustainable power sources . . . I'd like a mini-one myself one day . . . But i can...

Re: keep pet fish properly (alive!)

We always had goldfish . . . I seem to tenfoces them dying fairly regularly, though, although one survived fifteen years. Maybe it's worth having a fish on the subs bench in a smaller tank in your room or something? Then, if you do come down to find a floater one morning you can quickly flush it dow...

Re: VAT rise

My experience is limited to certain areas, but i found it easier to be really skint in france . . . There are organisations and charities in the uk that do free door for the homeless and pathetically broke . . . But i found there to be more and better quality in france. There seemed to be less of a ...

Re: run a laptop from a petrol generator?

Wow, 6k . . . mine's only a 1.1, which is fine for me. We do also have a community 4k . . . but from what you say, it sounds as though I'm better off sticking to my own little one where I know what loads are running. . . I only use it with a phone charger, laptop, battery charger . . . and it seems ...

Re: VAT rise

Remember Zoe, people without much money, when it comes to buying goods, tend to be forced to buy the very cheapest (all this Aldi/Lidl shite that's flooding in). It lasts two minutes and then they're snookered. 'Landfill fodder' was mentioned on another thread. You're spot on. . . I'm on a low inco...
