Re: TV licencing bloke calls...

Odsox -- cheers for that. My dad assured me they could do all that stuff when I was a kid, but I never knew *how* exactly. I've always wondered.

I'd love to know if they can do it on digital sets, just out of curiosity /may-have-to-google-this-one

Re: Buy cheap buy twice

The OH is craning over my shoulder because I mentioned this thread to him. He seemed to think his thread had arrived -- not because he's self sufficient, but because he likes stuff that just doesn't break, bless him. Other recommendations for goods: 1980s water-cooled VWs (apparently). Nokia 1100s. ...

Re: Buy cheap buy twice

The OH has a Macbook from 2003 and it still works (though he does sometimes get annoyed at some websites that decide to be non-inclusive of older browsers). Mind, the Apple computer my dad bought in 1984 still works -- mostly for games though since the daisy wheel printer died 10 years ago. Ikea boo...

Re: Uses for used cat litter?

We have some excess cat litter (we found an obvious owned cat, but she was obviously lost, so we took her in for a few days. We bought litter, and not having a cat... well). We've had some moisture issues around the house and in the car. Stick cat litter in envelope. Leave on dashboard/in corner. No...

Re: 10 things I've done that you probably haven't

1. I traveled from Land's End to John O'Groats (on holidays) by the time I was 6. 2. I camped for 17 days on Lundy this last summer, monitoring rhododendron clearance. I ended up sharing my tent briefly with a pygmy shrew. 3. I became the youngest ever senior lecturer at the University of Glamorgan ...

The people vote for the reptiles and the reptiles rule the people. ...[people vote]... because the wrong reptile might get in!

That aside, nah... nah, don't see that happening. Or being enforced if it did.

Re: xmas top

That's a lovely tunic top! I've been trying to get the courage together to make something similar as I find little joy in shops (being similarly gifted in certain departments). How long did it take to sew together?

And also, that's a total win for the fabric too!

Re: Can I "not buy anything new for a year?"

I've only bought five new items of clothing in the last year. One pair of shoes (my old ones started leaking), two tops, a cardie and some military surplus duvet pants. I also bought a loaf tin. Mind, the loaf tin, one of the tops and the cardie were bought mostly because I had a gift card for a sho...

Re: Little things that really annoy you!

My personal bugbears for today: Rented accomodation that turns out not to have a damp course, so that when the pointing goes on the bricks outside, you move your stuff in the corner of the spare room and find that water is actually forming on droplets on the inside walls of your house. And in the bu...

Beef shin cooked in soy, cider vinegar, apple juice and ginger, a la HFW. With a few extra ingredients and a substitution of red peppers for chili. Really looking forwards to it :D

Re: In what ways aren't you green?

Hm. I use the computer, a lot, and my energy consumption is pretty high in general (working 1-2 days a week means the heating's starting to be put on the other days, cups of coffee must be made, etc). However, I have improved on two years ago. Two years ago, I was a senior lecturer, stressed as anyt...

Re: Ideas needed!

Well, if you're artsy and craftsy, it's not a bad place to start. I made a little money here and there through eBay and etsy doing leatherwork when I was doing my MSc last year. Not enough to live offa completely, but I wasn't making a concerted effort for that -- it was about having money to have f...
