Re: How much are you paying for firewood?

I get all my firewood for free - from skips in builders yards, I also saw up and burn pallets, waste wood from my son's place of work (he's a shop fitter) we take the trailer once a fortnight, all year round and ask for and take wood - if it's in a skip they are glad to get rid of it, the pallets ar...

Re: In what way are you naughty?

Hi Brett - you're talking my language! I do what I do to save money, always have, I make my own compost as it's free and I like that price and grow my own veg and save marg tubs as seed trays all because it saves me money. I don't like waste and think materialism is pointless and I don't care what c...

Re: Pulling in our horns!!

See my blog and also google 'life after money' for Mean Queen's blog - we have no spare income after paying bills, debts, car payment etc and it's going to be hard until 2012! when half our debts will be paid off - I don't have growing children (just money sucking almost grown up ones) and things l...

Re: double glazing excitement

Good for you! My double glazing has water dripping down it in the morning, but I don't have the heating on in every room, just the front room. Best thing is that it cuts out the traffic noise - which I don't like.

Re: Kitchen tools - what do you use?

I have been given loads of bits and bobs that I've luckily been given: bread machine, microwave, mini oven, hand blender, food processor, electric whisk........oh, I don't have a tumble drier!

Re: pine floorboards

We, mad as it sounds, got under the floor gap and filled in all the spaces to stop the drafts, sanded and used ecos floor paints, it takes ages to sand the floor ready and then to dry but it has lasted five years almost unmarked - about £50 a room.

Re: 101 professions for a self-sufficientish, thinking person

Can't say I have an ish job. I teach and commute by train and bike, recycle everything from school - the whole school does and I moved so I could use public transport and shop locally and have a garden

Re: Improving your Ish in 2010

1. Knit more blankets from wool from Oxfam - bought loads as I need to keep donating for Haiti. 2. Brew my own wine - I love a drop but it's so expensive. 3. Grow some veg - I have space and lots of big pots. 4. Make more compost. 5.collect a lot more rain water and use it to flush the loo. 6. Don't...

Re: Recession??

It has really affected us, sister in law and son were made redundant and have scraped about for work ever since. There are redundancies at work and I fear for my job. food has gone up and up and so have utilities. We are very careful and should have been like this all along so we wouldn't owe money....

Re: HANGING CLOTHES TO DRY / news article.

Don't mean to boast Milims, but it was about 10 degrees here today and every I washed byhand almost dried, just finishing off towels and tee shirts on the rads before they go off at 8. But Cornwall is the tropics compared to some places.

Re: HANGING CLOTHES TO DRY / news article.

I've noticed every one has their washing hanging out in the winter sunshine today, I part dry mine out side then put it next to the radiator in the evening but I don't have a machine to dry it and I mostly wash the clothes by hand anyway. Saves energy and costs and is of course greener
