Re: Useful tips for starting on a self sufficientish path

I also grew up in it... We had all our own veg and most of the fruit, lots of it preserved for winter. We never had a car, either. My parents had gone through two world wars and never got out of the habit of mending and keeping anything that might still come in useful.

Re: Just saying Hello from Brittany, France

Hi Beewoman - what a coincidence, I'm just reading "A honey bee heart has five openings" - a year of keeping bees, by Helen Jukes... (I tend to buy anything that has bees in the title!) Your lot of animals sounds fun. I had a couple of goats in the past - yes, I agree with Flo - lots of, er, enterta...

Re: The repair shop

I don't think there are age restrictions as such here - think I read somewhere that the guys had to be 18 because of some of the machinery they had in that particular shed. But I haven't seen women's sheds yet. Maybe a thing to plan for my retirement... (If ever.)

There are the known greens, the unknown greens, and those greens that don't know they really are brown...

Or something like it.

Re: The repair shop

Men's sheds seem to be alive and well in Scotland at least: https://scottishmsa.org.uk/find-a-shed/ I talked to some men in Dundee last year - they were selling some of their crafty things, like wood turning. I told them I envied them - for us women there's only coffee mornings and knit and natter.....

Our bottle banks are those old dome things - they don't have a lid. I'm guessing that shoving a wheelibins worth of small pieces of broken glass, through a 6" hole might not be an option.
Might depend on the size of the wheelie bin!

Also, anybody know what to do with a wheelie bin full of broken glass? I feel like it's recyclable, but have yet to work out where I can take it.
That's a tricky one. You obviously can't put it into bottle banks.
Why not? As long as it fits through the holes - the lid might even be open...

The most interesting thing I ever found was about 30 golf balls. And no, I don't play golf.

I seem to be self sufficient in cat fur! Both cats have been moulting continuously since early September.
It's amazing, isn't it,how much fur these cats produce... I sometimes wonder there's any cat left after I've picked up another wad of fur!

Re: Phone apps

I feel like I need a mobile phone because of the long distances I travel, often alone, to get to - well anywhere really. A "just in case" phone which usually cost a tenner from T$sco. We laughingly referred to them as my "drug dealer" phone (anyone seen The Wire?). Aren't they called "burner phones...

Re: Phone apps

I'm on my third mobile phone by now. No smart phone - still can't see any reason why I should get one of those. The first I bought because I was living in shared accommodation without landline. The second because I'd lost the first, and again I was without landline. These days I have the mobile just...
