Re: weight loss 2013

Positive for mice - that's good. I like cheese  Probably part of the problem... The Horizon programme mentioned by Jon featured the mouse research. Here's a linky for anyone who is interested. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-19112549 I really don't have the will power to restrict my ca...

Re: weight loss 2013

Count me in too! I've been to the doctor's this morning and got the results of some blood tests I had before Christmas. You know, the register-at-a-new-surgery MOT type things. Not good news... When we were living full time in France, my GP there tut-tutted and suggested I should lose 10kg and I was...

Re: Doomsday preppers

Never mind about Doomsday, I think the "preppers" for Christmas in our town are enough. Having lived abroad for a few years, I'm out of practice at UK supermarket shopping. You'd think they were shopping for a siege rather than a two day holiday. I was in Marksies today and it was horrible. ...

Re: Brambles

Be careful what you wish for! They do make a pretty effective hedge and I'm sure they would discourage thieves but you would need to manage them or it would get out of control really quickly. Raspberries might be a better option as they are not quite so invasive. We spend a lot of time hacking back ...

Re: thifty food source

Jon - you are spot-on with your description of Noz. In fact, I came out of the Lorient Noz one day only to find some oik trying to prise off the middle of one of my car's alloy wheels!! He hurriedly hid the screwdriver he was using in his sock and pretended to tie his shoelace. Despite that,...

Re: Moving

Good luck with the move and house hunting Keith. Please keep us posted about how things go - again, no idea about NS! We'll rely on you to inform and educate us about it!! We've also had the wanderlust as we moved back to the UK from France this year mainly for the kids. Despite my worries, they hav...

Re: prevent flour weevils?

I'd agree with the above. It would seem that the flour is already infested when you buy it. I suppose you could sieve it with a very fine sieve when you buy a new supply - you might not find the eggs but you might be able to see the adult moths (or parts of them!)

Re: Clean Bottle glasses

I remember trying to clean out a crystal decanter that I bought at a vide grenier (French equiv to a boot sale).

Someone recommended using denture cleaning tablets although I actually got it clean using a baby's bottle cleaning brush and a bit of biological washng powder.

Re: What are we all having for dinner?

Mum's night off so the Old Man is in the kitchen making chicken curry, an aloo gobi and mushroom bhaji for our dinner. Smells divine...

The offspring have had home made chicken and chips smothered with about half a bottle of tomato ketchup.

Re: Friends coming to you on their 'holidays'

Been there, done that. It seems to me that some people (let's call them freeloaders) believe that their visit to your home is also a holiday for YOU rather than a chore! Like others, we've learned from bitter experience that you need to set the ground rules when you get The Phone Call or Facebook me...

Re: Get rid of moss?

It is funny you should mention moss! We've also got it growing over our gravelled drive and this has never happened in the 10 years we've had the house. The house faces due south and the drive slopes away from the house towards the west and the drainage fosse and it gets the sun all day. We've no dr...

Interesting idea to use a dehumidifier to dry the washing indoors. Makes sense though.

Re: Drawing a UK state pension from abroad

Glad to help. Get your claim in quick though as it seems Ian Duncan-Smith is looking for a way to close the loophole and stop ex pat pensioners claiming - never mind how much tax and NI they've paid.
