Re: Substitutes for demi johns?

In the UK you can buy rubber grommets that fit into a hole in the lid of a 5l water bottle.you have to drill the right sizf.e hole for them yourself but thats no problem.I have some as well as normal glass demijohns.Forgot to say that a normal airlock then fits through the grommet and makes a good s...

Re: Crimson flowered broad beans

Im sorry I cant post pictures but the beans are coming on ok.Next year I hope to grow just crimsons at home and save seed from the best plants.I hope a six foot privet hedge will keep them reasonably isolated from next door and I will select for the darkest flower colour.

Re: Crimson flowered broad beans

I have given this an update because the beans are now flowering. In the end I settled for a test crop of Crimsons, Martoks and some Suttons to grow as a comparison.Next year I will grow just my favorite variety at home and lots of others on my share of an allotment. So far the crimsons show a variati...

Re: does anybody have any grape vine seeds that they wanna swap

The season for grape cuttings is autumn pruning time after all the leaves fall off and the vines are dormant.Push the cuttings into the soil in a sheltered dampish corner and see how many sprout up next spring, they started to put out leaves about end of april this year in Worcester. If you ask about ...

Re: Bring back the horse

My OH remembers working horses on his uncles Cumbrian farm and also the arrival of the first tractor but that is another story.Back to horses, they had to be fed and tended every day and unlike a machine cannot just be left in a barn till wanted. If farming returns to horsepower the working hours will...

Re: grow a hop plant?

I cut a piece of a hop plant a few weeks ago,it was struggling to cope with a heap of builders rubble so I thought Id try rooting a cutting.Anyway I took it home and stood it in a jar of water on the windowsill. It drooped looked sad and some of the leaves shrivelled up but some survived and it now h...

Crimson flowered broad beans

I bought the seeds from Robinsons near Preston and hope they will be interesting.I also bought Martok seeds which are a really ancient variety. I will have to see if I can grow the Martock over the road in my friends garden as I want to save seed from both and want them to breed true.I found out abo...

Re: HELP...Can I move an old well established Wisteria??

We had one by the corner of the house that the surveyor suggested we remove [1970s house] So sadly we did.Last year at least 8 years later a wisteria appeared in the same spot so Iam going to try and shift it but will not get much rootball due to paths tarmac drive etc.Wish me luck and I will cross ...

Re: Books to avoid

Sleepyowl I dont like the "magik" books much either.I think I belong mostly in the northern tradition .I also find a lot of books on all subjects are a triumph of style over content. This is where the library wins hands down, you take the books back.

Re: DIY lecky

I started out with a small trickle charge panel off the internet, this was intended to stop the battery in my van being flattened by the alarm because it was only used once or twice a week. The 1.5watt panel was a bit small but ok for my husbands car as it had no alarm . Van still needed a panel so I ...
