Re: Ersatz
I did mention bread being adulterated with sawdust. This seems to have been done on the continent rather than this country and whilist we aren't in any hurry to eat it , it would be nice to at least try it as an experiment even if we only try baking and tasting. Check the ingredients list on high-f...

Re: Rabbit Babies death
I haven't had the chance to raise rabbits yet, but I've read a lot about it. There was something mentioned about the mothers killing their babies if they felt threatened, the example given was a cat sleeping on the roof of their hutch.
I'm sure you have them in a secure pen, but do they feel safe?

Still nicer than what I thought when I read the title. I was about to start lecturing!
(For anyone who didn't know, in the US "faggot" is a derogatory term for gay male.)

Re: Veganism not an option any more
Thriving on a vegan diet requires the right mix of enzymes, and unfortunately, not everyone is able to produce all the right enzymes in the right amounts. I know one enzyme that's commonly missing is the one that makes long-chain omega acids out of short-chain ones. Long-chain omegas are found in me...

Re: Out of date tins
There was a tin found in a shipwreck that was 150+ years old. Upon opening, it was found to still be in edible condition, and the cat that the contents were fed to suffered no ill effects.

Treat it like venison, the meats are similar enough.

Re: Do you suffer from migraine
I had recurring migraines when I was a teenager, got them almost every day. It turns out that my neck had gotten slightly out of alignment during a horseback riding accident, and the act of looking down at a textbook to read was triggering these migraines. Fortunately a chiropractor was able to fix ...

Re: I love a bargain, what did you buy today??
I was at the thrift store yesterday looking for a pair of shoes, found some that look like they were never worn, and fit perfectly. Plus, I found a food processor with a dough blade (my shoulder doesn't tolerate kneading very well, and my no-knead bread attempts always came out lumpy and crumbly), a...

Grow your own. It isn't hard, and both the seeds and the books on how to cure it are available online.

Re: Actually making your own chocolate !
Oh, and to really bring out the chocolate flavor, soak a vanilla bean in a bottle of almond or other nut oil for a month, then add a teaspoon of the oil to whatever fat you're using to make the cocolate with. PS: This probably doesn't need to be said, but just in case there are beginners reading, do...

Re: Actually making your own chocolate !
If you need your chocolate to be a little more solid, you can melt a little beeswax into it. Just make sure it's pure beeswax, which is edible. Some candy makers use paraffin wax, which works, but I'd be leery of it.

Re: out of date beans
A friend of mine was friends with an archeologist working on a dig in New Mexico. One of the artifacts found there was a large sealed clay pot, with dried beans inside, roughly 1500 years old. As a test, they took a few beans and tried to grow them, and took a few more (not many) and cooked them up....

Re: who's got the oldest singer sewing machine on here??
Not sure how old mine is. My great-grandfather bought it used in the 1930's as a present for my great-grandmother. It's been passed around a few times. When I was a teenager I was trying to sew a halloween costume and got really frustrated with the plastic high-tech sewing machine I had borrowed, wh...

Re: process aloe vera..
If using externally, you can either break off a leaf and dab it on straight, or whiz it in a non-food blender.
For using internally, carefully slit open the leaf and gently scrape the clear pulp. Take care not to scrape into the green part, as that can act as a rather strong laxative.
